TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

After reading various threads about diabetic ID I'm thinking about getting a tattoo on my left wrist. I'd probably get just the word "diabetic", hopefully quite small but clearly written in a simple sans-serif font without any symbol, so functional, not decorative.

Does anyone have such a tattoo? I'd be interested in seeing them.

If I ever get in a situation where I don't particularly want to show it (an initial job interview for example) I guess a watch strap will cover it.

Paul, I got this one in 1993.

One thing to caution you to is, the smaller the letting the harder it is to read, and as it ages, the ink settles further into the dermis layer and makes it look like it is spreading out. Just my thoughts. I have the med alert symbol on my right wrist and am a teacher, and never had issues with it. Best wishes!

ok, thanks for the advice about the lettering size. I'm still not sure about the tattoo idea yet which is why I was hoping to see some. I was thinking of just the word "D I A B E T I C " with space between the letters, more or less the width of the back of my wrist.

I must admit, I don't know what the med alert symbol is for, is this a more US specific thing? I dont recognise it so I don't know if anybody else would here.

Here is a picture of my medic alert symbol. I do think it is US specific. I thought about adding Type Two around it, but I didn't want to go overboard. Medics in the US are now being trained to recognize the symbol in tattoo form.

I have gone a little overboard but check out my page when you get a second... I have a few Diabetic related tattoo's.

hey this is mine- sorry it's a bit fuzzy and the lighting is bad cuz i' m at work and used my phone :)

i know you want just text on yours but maybe you can put it where i have mine- a watch should cover it. either way you can wear long sleeves at an interview and even if they see it's not a big deal b/c they will have to find out youre a diabetic anyways!

just keep in mind too that emt's may not notice your tattoo unless there is a medic alert by it!

mine's actually a dragon on a sword instead of a snake on a stick because "everyone's got their dragon to fight in life" and my health is mine so that's why it looks a little different than the typical medic alert. you have to look close to see that it's not a snake
