I've Had Diabetes for Over 20yrs!

This group is for people out there who were born with or close to born with diabetes and have had it for a long time. I have had it for about 21yrs now and it's very hard to find people and talk to others who are dealing with the same issues I am.

Hi everyone! I'm new to this site, but I think I'm getting the hang of it lol. I have had diabetes for a very long time, and I can't seem to find any other diabetics that are in the same place as I am dealing with the complications such as nerve damage.

gr82bteaching,

Welcome to the club, I will be "celebrating" my official diagnosis in September this year - 38 years. Once I was diagnosed though, I was able to backtrack to November 1972, when I was hospitalized with the flu and a week of temps above 102.

I'll bet it's gr82blearning when you are teaching!

Welcome Den . . . I’ve had T1 for more than 30 years, and it is never easy, and certainly not perfect. I have learned, however, that diabetes can make you very strong, and lead to things that may not otherwise be possible. It has helped me search for things that really matter, and brought healing that would not otherwise have been possible . . . and by that I do not mean a “cure.” Trust your intuition and follow your heart . . . it will not lead you astray.

Hi everyone. I have been diabetic for 26 years. Diagnosed in 1985 in my early 20's. Just now having to really deal with some serious complications. I knew it was gonna happen . I am on a pump now. Really like it but still not perfect.

Sorry I've been so quiet for so long. I'm currently in an accelerated nursing program so I don't get a lot of time to spend on forums lately. However, in addition to dealing with this program my mystery diagnosis was finally solved. I was recently labeled with SIBO or SBBO (Small intestine or bowel bacterial overgrowth). It is a kind of neuropathy of the small intestines, a complication of diabetes. Has anyone else on here been diagnosed with it as well? For those who previously were diagnosed with IBS, it turns out many people actually have this.

I have just hit the 20yr mark in Feb. But I have quite a few complications from diabetes but nerve damage is the worst since my feet are proof of that. I am in constant pain in my feet and night is always the worst for me. But other that I feel great and just happy I have made it past what my doctor told me of "Why are you not died yet?".

Thank you, Mike and Richard! :-) It's fun to talk to the people who remember the "olden days" (although some of you remember a lot more olden days than I do.

If there's anything I'm glad to be rid of, it's R and NPH. I also remember the old wipe and wait meters that took 2 minutes to give a result.

Currently I have a pump and a CGM, and I'm achieving flatter lines than I ever used to do. I can hardly wait for my next A1c (coming in March), because I only started the CGM in October.

Mike, I crossed the Pacific Ocean twice by ship in the 70's, before stabilizers, in the winter, with lots of rock and roll. LOVED it! I've also been sailing on Lake Tahoe with friends, which was lots of fun, but I could never do it myself! You must really enjoy it!

I'm sure I'll enjoy this group!
