Hi Aaron, I am 72 and not very strong, but I am healthy after 66 years of T1. It sounds like you are on the right track. Stay on it and you can have a long healthy life too!

its great to see a forum where ppl like me can talk to others with diabetes for a longtime , I have had type1 for 32 years ,Im a healthy strong 39yr old that has worked his ass off to stay healthy , and its good to see that there r others out there

FWIW - (Apologies if I am repeating myself...) I treat all my numbers as just that -- NUMBERS! Don't let the numbers beat you up!

IOW, I look at it kind of like a thermostat. If the temperature is too high, I turn on the AC, if it's too low I turn on the heat.

I hit the "I don't care" phase periodically, mostly due to the major depressive disorder I have had since childhood. Almost killed myself doing that last year.

So I've developed my own mantra "It's the insulin, DUMMY" because when my BGs are good, I irrationally imagine the diabetes has gone away while I wasn't looking, and I can eat unwisely and omit insulin, which has not once done anything other than show me that the diabetes is relentlessly there. I have to convince my emotional self that it's the insulin that gives me good BGs, and my own pancreas functions more like a dirty dish rag! LOL!!

The second thing I am working on convincing myself about is that diabetes is going to be my best buddy for the rest of my life -- joined at the hip, and no matter what I do, it's not going away, so I might as well figure out ways to get comfortable with it instead of fighting it all the time. I have to say that the CGM and pump help TREMENDOUSLY for me, and I'm terrified that when I get to Medicare in a year and a half, they'll take them away from me. So I'm going to work with my psychiatrist to see if we can get them to realize that this is a matter of life and death for me. Already almost killed myself before the CGM -- I want whatever will help me avoid going through THAT again!

Good luck on figuring out how to remedy whatever it is that's causing your "I don't care" problems -- because in the long run, you HAVE to care! :-)

Kayla, I am at 39 years, and yes, I have hit diabetes burn-out a few time. Depression is an on-going battle that comes and goes, but is here for me more than it's not. That plays heavily in the "I just don't care" diabetes burn-out phases.

Well I will hit 60 years next year. I have a distinct memory of what I was informed that I would be lucky if I made it to 40. At that time diabetes was at its infancy in treament. The only way to test was urine. Now we have meters, insulin pumps and CGMs. I can not complain I have very few complications. I have had 2 major laser surgeries and 2 touch ups. I have miminal periphal neuropathy. No kidney problems. the thing that through me for a lupe was the clinical depression I suffered through. Things are better. I had hoped to make the Joslin program but was unable, Planning for the next one

Telling a PWD how long they will live is so WRONG! Because NO ONE knows how long they will live. All you can do is take each day as a gift, because there are no guarantees about tomorrow. (Ask the earthquake and tsunami victims about that!) I am so glad you folks have made it this long -- I hope to live a lot longer with the D too! :-)
