Sheila I have heard of cushings and Diabetes but I have to read more about it...my brain is fried at the moment too, lol. I have heard of the thyroid link too... that must have been horrible to go between those extremes.. we should all write about our experiences with all of this... at least in our blogs if no where else.

Thanks Melitta, I read about that at some point, but I thought there was some other antibody or something that is also detected for type 2? I read an article about how they were researching that type 2 may also be an autoimmune reaction, but it seemed like nothing further came of that. As I said my endos said they would say I was type 1 even if I didn't have antibodies, so I guess not all type 1 have them, due to the high bg, weight loss, and dka etc.

in addition Ruth, that is horrible that you had to go through all of that... anyone whose diabetes isn't responding to the treatment they receive needs to be examined closely to see what is going on and what needs to be changed... I read an account online of a teenager who was diagnosed as type 1 but who was type 2, I think she was on insulin with poorly controlled bg for a few years before they figured out she was really type 2. I'm not sure how that could happen, but obviously there is a lot to be improved on in diabetes care and healthcare in general.

Ruth, I totally agree with you, it should only take a few days or however long it takes to do the blood tests. Everyone presenting with blood sugar issues and who is diagnosed as having diabetes should be tested for antibodies and c peptide levels. There is NO way it should take 4 years.

Hi Meee: Autoantibodies, indicative of immune-mediated destruction of the beta cells, are detected in about 10% of people who have been (mis)diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. But those are the misdiagnosed; according to the Expert Committee on the Diagnosis and Classification of Diabetes Mellitus, autoantibodies (GAD, ICA, IA-2, zinc transporter) are not present in Type 2 diabetes, they are indicative of Type 1 autoimmune diabetes.

meee - It just seemes to me that with multiple doctors, including a couple from a big medical school, it shouldn't have taken 4+ years for someone to get around to testing me, especially with all my notes on what I was doing that wasn't working.

I had Adrenal Cushing's Syndrome prior to the D. The tumor pumps out high doses of corticosteroids creating an immuno-suppressed state. When they removed the tumor, I rebounded with D over the next year. The thirst was unbelievable. So, I went from one pole to the other. My brother has D, but he was dxed as Type 2. I have an aunt who developed Type 2 in her old age, but who knows if both of these people were misdiagnosed. I already had Hashimoto's thyroiditis and profound allergies.

Thanks Melitta, I couldn't find anything about that online , I will read those books...Ruth, I think you're right about that... Zoe, I think the main difference between type 1 and 2, other than the T cell reaction that we know of so far, is the insulin deficiency, lack of insulin production and insulin resistance/overproduction... I think I was hoping I wouldn't have antibodies so they could just decide this was all a big mistake and that maybe my pancreas would just go back to normal...lol.

I also read type 2 have antibodies also.. I have to read more about it... I think that anyone over a certain age also is just assumed to be type 2 although now some children have type 2 also... I am sure my brother is going into type 2, but unfortunately he has gone off his diet a bit since his bg was more normal. but it went up to 160's after some popcorn around the time I was diagnosed.
