Comment by Sheila Fitz on April 17, 2013 at 6:37am Melitta, I think this is a great idea. From time to time, I'll run into a person that I think is really LADA and will scribble your name on a piece of paper, and tell them to do a search. This is a much better idea. Would you believe my hip-hop teacher recently told me that she was a diabetic, a Type 2. When I started to talk about the connection to Celiac, she exclaimed that *she* was a Celiac. I live in an Irish community in the Chicago area. The stats on the Irish aren't good. I suspect my own brother is not a Type 2, but he can't hear what I am saying.
Hi Everyone! Just wanted to let you know that I just posted a new blog on autoantibody testing for Type 1a/LADA diabetes. I welcome your input on the blog and hope it is useful for people.
Comment by Amy on April 8, 2013 at 3:34pm Thank you guys! I know I've been inactive for my own group for a while! My life just has been insane, crazy & frustrating. Now that I am on unpaid medical leave, I can focus on the group again.
Hi Amy; great to see you again and I hope things are on the upswing for you!
Comment by Gerry on April 6, 2013 at 3:40pm ... glad you're back, Amy! I hope you're doing better. Diabetes is a never-ending management challenge ....
Comment by Amy on April 6, 2013 at 9:43am sorry I haven't been on in a long time! My life has been a real mess for quite some time.
Comment by meee on December 6, 2012 at 6:35pm I do believe controlling our bg as much to normal as possible is the best thing we can all do.. and I hope it is preserving what I have left... I went on a low carb diet in late June I think after figuring out there was no other way to control my bg close to the normal range.
Amazingly enough, the DCCT was one of the studies that demonstrated that tight control preserves remnant beta cells in people with Type 1 diabetes. Bernard Zinman, one of the DCCT researchers, said that all of the DCCT study subjects who had adult-onset Type 1 diabetes had measureable c-peptide. Those who were in the tight control group had much better preservation of beta cell function versus those in the not-tight-control group.
Comment by David (dns) on December 6, 2012 at 10:18am Natalie,
There is evidence that normalizing blood sugar levels and keeping them that way does indeed have a revitalizing effect on beta cells. Everyone responds differently, of course, but there are studies that suggest it very strongly. I don't have the specifics at my fingertips but I have run across references to them in Bernstein and elsewhere.
Comment by Natalie ._c- on December 5, 2012 at 10:16pm I guess I was lucky. I went only 5 months on sulfonylureas (which have since been proven to have cardiovascular risks), which made exactly no difference in my BGs before I was able to convince my endo that fasting BGs in the 180 - 200 range, and PP BGs in the high 200s were not acceptable. It is clear that I still had significant beta cell function at that time, but I wasn't happy with the less-than-emergency but higher-than-good-control BGs. It is possible that going on insulin fairly early (diagnosis Aug.1993; insulin May 1994) may have prolonged the life of my beta cells -- control didn't get hard until way later. I don't know if preservation of beta cells with insulin use is proven or not, but it seems to have helped me. But anyway, in this modern day and age, when antibody and C-peptide testing ARE possible, there is no reason not to do it. EVEN if the person SEEMS like a classic T2, sometimes surprises happen -- we've even seen them here on TuD.
