Hi

I saw this article today regarding Lantus and its correlation to cancer. The article states there should be "no cause for alarm".

I saw the article as well. I use Lantus, 22 units at night. You have to be careful about what you believe.
Yes, I thought the same thing. I am still taking my Lantus and will follow-up with the doctor within the week to make sure everything is okay.

However, I conducted further research and verified the findings of the Lantus study - via the FDA web site.

I used Lantus since 2004 (January) and now I use Levemir.... my Endo was not agree with me when I asked to switch to Levemir 3 weeks ago. But I've read the studies about "Lantus may cause cancer" and I spoke with some friends who are doctors, they all said "take care". 24 millions of people take Lantus, lot of money! I don't take insulin to destroy others parts of my body, or gain weight. So I use Levemir and I really think it is good for me because I have no more hypos at night. Sanofi Aventis told that they made a study 2 weeks ago but I think they didn't have the time to do it so ....
Word is filtering down at grass root level that Lantus is not safe. Official word through the Australian Diabetes Society is that risk is inconclusive but urgent research is necessary, and if clients are concerned they should be shifted to an alternative insulin. Personally I put on weight with Lantus and went through periods of stomach problems that doctors couldn't determine. Thankfully it has settled but I now take only rapid Humulog in pump and feel relieved I'm off Lantus.
Have been on Lantus since June of 2008, without problems. I was diagnosed with Breast cancer in 2006. So as for Breast cancer, I was not taking Lantus at the time. My type was estrogen positive. All work ups for cancer done yearly and have all been negative. All this and I am still on Lantus.

I blogged about this and tried to explain the science behind it. It can get pretty complex, really quick... but I tried to explain it at a baseline level of why large amount of lantus over a long period of time can potentially increase the risk of cancer.
