i had taken r and nph since diagnosis 14+ years ago. not more than a month ago i was able to try out the humalog/lantus approach. let me just say that i am terribly happy, and i really feel like my next a1c will be significantly improved!

Woohoo! I was dx'ed with type 1 in October with an A1c of 11.5, and I already have it down to 7.0! I'm on Lantus and Humalog right now :)

Some one said something about gaining weight on Insulin and it doesn't have to happen. (I'm a fat--resistant type 2) I take a lot of insulin and I've only gained 4 pounds since february last. The weight is due to bad eating habits not insulin.

Lots of discussions on here what if you are on both or multi types like me?

Thanks people. I see the doc on Thursday and can ask about this 'early rising' - among a few other things I've learned here - like this Victoza drug, as I'm sure to gain weight on the Lantus.

I'm not sure I could be a candidate for a pump. I already have a couple appliances on my belly for missing digestive tract organs. My biggest problem is my allergy to adhesives. It takes a very long time to get my body to accept any kind of tape. And like Hank - I sweat like a priest in an all boys congregation ;-) And I'm way up here in the vast northern wilderness! A couple of my meds apparently contribute to my higher body temperature. Personally, I think my body thermostat broke years ago.

Hey Kelley - at least you wake up high! I have to take the Notty drugs to get that way! As for the 2 a.m. snack - there's some good TV in the middle of the night! I'm also a really light sleeper but I just tell everyone that "sleep is for wusses" and hope they don't ask anything else. :-)

Thanks again, Janice.

@bikette...sounds like you're experiencing the Somogyi Effect. Blood sugars drop low in the middle of the night. If you eat a snack, it would counter act this and you have normal readings in the moring. Otherwise w/o a snack, your body tries to compensate and you end up with a high morning BG.

I was on the pump for almost 3 years after injecting for 16. I had to get off pump about 4 months ago as I developed what appears, to me anyway, an alergic reaction to the infusion set. I kept failing, sometimes 5 times in one day, and my BG started going all over the place. Now am on Lantus, 25 units twice a day, and Humalog at meals (I count carbs, which I learned while on the pump). That means I inject several times a day, but I am happy to be off the pump. In North Carolina, where I live, it gets very hot and humid, so I sweat a lot. The pump infusion set does not do well in a sweaty environment, so it would come off a lot. If you decide to go on the pump, get a hold of a product called IV3000. It is a wipe that leaves your skin tacky (like contact cement) and helps the sets stick better. As I have found in 19 years of being Type 2 that tahes insulin, we all seem to be a little different. You have to use all the knowledge and use what works for you.

I'm always high in the morning. I know it's not a late night snack...if I see 2am there's something wrong. If you ever figure this disease out bikette let me know. :)

Those pumps sound amazing - scary, but amazing. My first reading in the morning is often high even several (8+) hours after any carbs. And yet, I can eat something naughty at 2 a.m. and get an almost perfect reading by 7 a.m. My BG never seems to cooperate with my diet the way it is supposed to. I really don't understand how this disease works and I've had it for 12 years. But I'm learning a lot at tuD!

I suffered, if that is the correct word, from this. Before using an insulin pump my endo kept increasing my Levemir until my morning BG was within the prescribed range. Then I was continualy going low throughout the day. Now I have a higher basal rate in the evening. This solved the problem...one of the many benefits of an insulin pump.
