Thanks Emmy. I think I'm going to try mixing anyways. I'll carry apple juice and glucagon amongst my energy gell plus avoid aerobic exercise. I won't miss meals and check myself every hour for results. This way if my glucose drops off I'll know it was the mix and not the latter.

Hi all.....Does anyone mix or have knowledge of successfully mixing Levemir/Detemir with Humalog, Humulin Regular or Novolog in one syringe directly before injecting? Of course only two of these at a time. Hoping to decrease injections via mixing my 2 basal injections of Levemir with Humalog or Regular. In the book Think Like a Pancreas on pg.40 is a chart of different insulin mixing combinations. It states whether or not they may be mixed at all and if so in what combination. For Levemir/Detemur it says yes for mixing with Humalog, Novolog or Regular.
(CONFUSION) Originally a nurse told me that Levemir could be mixed but Lantus couldn't. I knew this about Lantus but told her "no Levemir can't be mixed either". After discovering pg.40's Mixing chart I told her that she was rite. "They can be mixed" Arg Now at this point she told me "no they can't be mixed" and proceeded to show me some info on her phone saying not to mix. What the heck? At my last endo. appointment I forgot to ask him this question. I'm wondering if different doctors will give different info on this as well? I won't be able to ask mine until just before the new year. Hoping for clarification. Thanks....
I've been insulin dependent sense diagnosed back in 1985 at the age of two and a half years old. Originally started on NPH+Humulin Regular mixed in a syringe. In 1996 dropped the Regular and picked up Humalog. In early 2000 replaced the NPH with Lantus/Glargine. Over the years this has been the largest leap that I've experienced in improving energy. In late 2008 Lantus was no longer cutting it for me. It really hadn't been for some time so I thought to try a split dose. When my newer endo saw that I was using a split dose he suggested I switch to Levemir. This was to avoid the potential for stacking. So just before 2009 I started Levemir/Detemir. I'm now using it once or twice daily depending on appetite and activity level. I like this stuff. Its action profile is much more consistent and reliable. As of most recent I've once again picked up the Regular and keep it beside my Humalog for added maneuverability.

I started on Levemir about 3 yrs ago. When I was on Lantus I had too many lows at night. I take 10 units before bed. The levemir has been great. I am also on a sliding scale of Humalog 1 unit for every 10 crbs. I am doing well with the Humalog pen because it has 1/2 unit measurements. I am Type 1 and work hard on tight control. It is such a difficult desease to control.

An update on my insulin use...
I am now taking 60 units twice per day (morning and late evening) and have switched to NovoRapid anywhere from 5 - 20 units per meal and this seems to be working well. I have also started taking B12 vitamin once per day as recommended by my diabetes educator because I also take Metformin. Since starting the B12 the amount of NovoRapid I use has been getting less.
Anyone taking B12 vitamins have similar results or comments?

I have been on Levemir about a month now. I need a couple of units more than I did of Lantus. I've been ill with some sort of flu, and my blood sugar was up, but its coming back down to where it was before I was sick, so I know that the last 3 weeks of slightly elevated levels were due to the illness and not the Levemir. I'm glad that I won't have to increase my dose.

The Novopen Junior does half unit doses.

See this article: http://www.diabetesmonitor.com/pens.htm

You can also watch the video here to see how it dials up

Your local pharmacy or diabetes clinic should be able to provide one. The pharmacy will likely charge while the clinic might not.

Hello my Levemir's friends! strange things about my type 1 : I was with 12 units/day of Levemir and all was fine. No more hypos (lows) at night or in the afternoon. 3 weeks ago I had everyday big lows ( 38). So I made less units of Apidra and there were still lows. So I made 11 units of Levemir, then 10. Now I'm with 11 because with 10 units of Levemir I wake up with more than 200 ! Maybe I need 10,5. This is my question: I used the Novo pen with cartridges but it has 1 unit by 1 unit. Do you know if there are Novo pens with half unit? Hope you'll understand.

I finally started Levemir today! I had to delay it to use up the Lantus I had on hand.

I was a bit concerned about potential allergic reactions, so I started with only 3 units, and waited 2 hours before taking any more. I kept taking a few more units every hour or so until I had a full dose.

So far the only thing I've noticed is muscle aches and some joint pain. It feels rather like I have the flu coming on. Perhaps I do. I was feeling sick for a couple of days. I'm hoping its not a side effect of this insulin, I really want to stick with it.

My blood sugar was higher than normal today because I delayed the doses, but when you have as many allergies as I do, its the only way to deal with a change in meds. Its far safer to go slowly and wait and see if anything happens than to inject a full dose and end up in emerg with a severe reaction.

I took the same dose as my Lantus was, but did it over a longer period of time, so I won't be able to tell if I need a lower dose until tomorrow morning. My endo told me to take the same amount as when I was using Lantus.

I use NovoRapid at mealtimes.
