PaulR...
I read that type-1 vs type-2 link at Mental_floss, Those KNowledge junkies NEED a FIX, a fix of EDUCATION!

According to Joslin, U know THE diabetes experts, and others, Joslin has a 50yr club of sorts. They have documented a confirmed TYPE-1 that still has some insulin (but limited) production after FIFTY years as a type-1.

Here are some basics as I know them....

Type-1..there are TWO recognized subgroups
.........type-1a yep autoimmune, the most comon form of type-1
.........type-1b non autoimmune, aka atypical T1, or idopathic.

Type-2... The main most common feature of type-2 is insulin RESISTANCE.
..... While most have weight issues, there are a few skinny T-2s. In T-2 the body produces insulin, sometimes MORE than normal, in an effort to ever come the insulin resistance. Over time some T2's burn out their pancrease from over working it, naturally or due to oral meds.

Regardless of diabetes TYPE, the complications and treatment goals are about the same.

The diabetes Dx (diagnostic) waters get muddy often, and mis-information abounds. Everything diabetes is not always clear cut, and everyone does not fit PIGeon holes.

My Hubby and I started dating when we were in our teens. He actually found a basic book of Diabetes in our school library and read it shortly after we met. No other Guy that I had dated was that interested in learning about my Diabetes. I was impressed. He was with me the last day of my 3 day Coma. The Drs. said that I wasn't going to survive it, so my Parents let him into the ICU to stay with me. We were 19 y/o. I knew he was Mr. Right, for me. He still doesn't know all about the ins and outs of Diabetes but that's okay. He knows enough.. :)

GOOD COLD MORNING DEAR FRIENDS

With a lot of passion and so much desire...
The sweetest, that I very much like,
The words I more eagerly enjoy,
The ones that come from your lips, my love

Wish you all the best of Health My FRIENDS

Ms Kittyok, I would be hesitant to give you advice. Only you can walk a mile in your shoes. Welcome to Tu. Perhaps you could consider tutoring to supplement your teaching income. Some things you can deal with one day at a time. You are going to have to deal with other issues as a couple.

I would have to know you better to really give advice, but it sounds like you need to do more than wait for cooler weather because then another reason for him not to search may pop up.

Hi I am Pamela and both newly diagnosed with type 2 and a newlywed. I am finding stress makes my numbers go up, and we are experiencing alot of financial stress right now. I am a teacher who does not have a full time job because of cutbacks city wide-but I substitute regularly which brings in decent money, but my husband is unemployed and likes to play on the computer most of the day. He has looked for some jobs, but claims it is too hot outside to look for jobs any other places besides the internet..I am frustrated...MY job doesn't start until Aug 20....Any advice would be very welcomed.

My wife wasn't too clear about my diabetes until she became a Type II like me! Now we test, side by side, and compare results! We watch each other for hypo signs, so at least it's not so much on my shoulders any more!

According to the following link, if the body is producing insulin then it's Type 2, but I'm not so sure its as simple as that. Anyway you can do further reading by googling it.
Type 1 Vs Type 2 diabetes

Well I was pretty sure it wasn't something as simple as insulin dependent versus non-dependence...my Spock logic tells me that type does not necessarily equal severity. But i still have a few things I heard about diabetes stuck in my mind from many years ago, some no doubt from when people were generally less elightened.. Funny I have never heard her doctor say anything about type 1 or 2, just gives the appropriate instructions.

The simple answer to your question Billy would be that T1 is autoimmune and T2 is not. Unfortunatly that probably won't help you work out which your wife is :-)
