I am now convinced that controlling Diabetes is down to the patient.. Unfortunately, here in Britain, getting the best information falls to the patient too. Those who depend on the health care professions, don't do so well, because they still won't give what I call the RIGHT dietary advice. Since it's primarily carbs that raise BG, with a little help fom proteins. It makes sense to control the quantities of those. I'm constantly being told that we NEED to eat carbs for energy.I was told at a volunteers meeting last week that 200g carb per day is necessary. However, after I explained some of the biochemistry, the specialist Diabetes Nurse that was there [she's the head nurse of the main local diabetes clinic] said she's going to take time to study up on some more molecular biology. She said she was impressed by my knowledge. Much of the stuff I knew 40 years ago has vapourised. I used to be able to draw complex metabolic pathways, but no more. Anyway I suspect that our knowledge of them has changed.
Nevertheless, patients who have a basic knowledge of the structure of sugars and starches can understand why it isn't just sugars in the diet you need to watch.
Otherwise, I often encounter diabetics who've been told that although they shouldn't use sugar, it's ok to have biscuits [cookies].
DAAH! I even met a woman once who told me that a dietician told her she could have 2 Weetabix AND a piece of wholemeal toast for breakfast. I suspect that even a dietician would have said "either/or" to that choice. this woman was worried to be recording Bg levels of 17mmol/l [306mg/dl] However when I told her she'd probably feel better if she had a scrambled egg instead.WITHOUT TOAST.

I'm T2, for 18 months. First put on combo of metformin & glyburide--got to a 6.5 A1C. The glyburide seemed to cause weight gain & then hormonal shifts had me running low. Scary--so I went off glyburide.
For 3 months now, I have been on metformin alone & reduced my carb count slightly (to ~100 g/day). BGs are good; A1C is 6.3. Feeling much more positive & in control. I love not worrying about lows.

It has been a while for me as well since posting on the site. Two years ago I was diagnosed with Type 2 @ 11.5 AIC. I was put on oral meds and sent to education class. In three months I got my numbers down to 6.5. Three months of meds., exercise, diet and changing life style patterns. I have been able to maintain around 6.5, but I have not been as consistent with my regime and had much stress being in graduate school, and family.

If I am stressed, my numbers go up, If I don't move, my numbers go up. One consistent I have been able to somewhat control is healthy eating. Now that I'm off for the summer. I have been hiking, doing water workouts and walking and I feel better, while still on meds.

One thing I have learned over the last two years is learning how to keep a balance life. I had to learn not to take too much on, learn to say no, and realized that my latino family history/genes are present. I have to make choices all the time toward acceptance.

Hey!
I am fairly new to the site and came across this group to hopefully widen my knowledge on metformin and reduction in insulin resistance.
I am a T1 (11 years old when diagnosed) and have gradually put on weight ever since, my ratio's (DAFNE graduate) are slowly increasing and my BI also has risen from 24u to 36u in the last year, so now I'm taking enough to kill a horse!! :/ lol

I am looking into going on Metformin to lower my shots by a third and hopefully lose weight (I am a very active person), any one else have advice or done this themselves??
Thanks
Danie

Hello All,
I have not been on this site for a while, but I am back! I have had so many issues with trying to find a doctor that knows what he/she is doing. I was told back in March of last year that I was pre-diabetic and I was put on Metformin. I end up going to an endocrinologist and she does a did a 2 hour glucose test. My fasting blood sugar was 85 and two hours after I drank the glucose my blood sugar was 86. She said I did not have diabetes, but it turns out I had PCOS and this doctor took me off of Metformin. While I was off of the Metformin, I gained 20 pounds got debilitating fatigue and lots of other weird symptoms. Fast forward to one week ago and my GYN put me back on Metformin and it has made a world of difference. The Metformin seems to be causing me constipation at this point. I had the opposite problem when I took it before. I do not know what to do???? Please anyone with any ideas, I am all ears.

Oh my goodness Laura, don't be mad at yourself find another doctor. Something is wrong I'm an insulin resistant compulsive eater and I've never seen anything like an 11. The other person it right, you need those other tests. I've been a diabetic since 1996 and my diabetes has just gotten worse with time and bad eating.

You look thin and that is an aweful rapid jump.

I'm back to being a metformin fan again. I am taking 62 units of Lanus in and 150 units of novolog throughout the day. I hate taking metformin because it kills my stomach with flatulence and uncontrolable bowels. So you can imagine I skipped it a lot.

I found the answer with the new extended release metformin generic 500mg. I take one 4 times a day with meals and a snack and my bg went from the 300s down to 69 in 2 days (Oops!). I adjusted and now I'm running in the hundred area again, yay!!!! My last hgac1 was 9.2, I'm expecting a much better number by december.

Its good to know some people experience lows during exercise. I usually have breakfast about 1 hour before my 30 min morning walk, but find about 1/3 of the way through the walk I start to get shaky. I carry some jelly beans with me and slowly eat them so I can get home again safely. I have found that if I have a small not very sweet biscuit before I walk I feel much better.

Hi Hana, when you say seriously cut carbs how many grams are you talking about? I have recently cut down to about 40 grams of carbs a day and my bs is better. Only problem is I had a bs of 61 last night and got really wiped out.

I've been reading this thread and havecome to the conclusion that some people are asking too much of Metformin.
I use 2 x 500mg Metformin per day. 1 morning and 1 evening.. I keep my BG LOW never over 6[108] unless I do something stupid. I am curently walking 25 to 30 miles per week and I live in a HILLY place. Last A1c was 5.1%.
I am 63 years old and NEVER carb load before exercise. I use the gym and swimming pool regularly.
.I have also lost about44 pounds over a couple of years. I've stopped losing, but am holding. about 20% down on where I was.
The magic spell is: SEVERELY cut carbs. It means minimal medicaion and no discernable "progression"
