Alrighty folks-

I'm a Texan, but I am moving to philly in may. I'm a type1/LADA and I am a pumper. I would love to have a diabetes meet up in philly that would serve several purposes:
1. meet new friends, get support.
2. social get togethers with like minded diabetics.

This could mean once in a while meeting at a restuarant or the park in philly or some such. I am totally open to suggestions.

I also fantasize about: getting a group of diabetics together to do a walk for the cure type thing or some sort of mild running/walking activity. the fantasy continues wherein we meet up everyweekend at the park and run/walk for a few miles, stay in shape and socialize.

Other less physical options I am up for: diabetic book club- books do not have to be about diabetes- or just monthly coffee meetups.

anyone interested?

I've benefited so much from this site, just knowing there are other people out there who are dealing with the same old SH*T as me, day in and day out. I think this is the next logical step.

Hi lane, I am outside Philly, where will you live?
I am new to using this TuDiabetes and need to get more
into it.
I am 54, Diabetes since I was 12 years old,a K Teacher, married, no children,
love to walk, not much of a runner.
I use a pump, I live on the edge of "good control,
but I've been spared the other complications, and
my lows cost me work time, so I stay on the edge.
Hope your move is to move forward in your life.
Welcome to Philly, Great place.
Let me know where you will be.
Mary
I'll know where I am living sometime after next wednesday- my husband and I will be flying up to hunt for housing.
I will likely be near or in center city. I'll start work at Penn in June so I am trying to not be too far away.
WOW... excellent plan! Welcome to the Philly area.
which parts interest you? The meeting? The eating? The walking? The reading? I'm trying to get a feel for what people might be interested in.
ALL ASPECTS ARE OF INTEREST TO ME. I FEEL THE VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES WILL PROVIDE A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO 'DIVERT' THE GROUP'S ATTENTION IN AN ENJOYABLE WAY WHILE STILL ESTABLISHING THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF MUTUAL SUPPORT AS T1D'S.
I'd welcome Type 2's as well... even though we have a different basis for our disease, the end result is the same- managing our blood glucose levels with some sort of chemical intervention (insulin, drugs, etc).

I really like the idea of a book club. I've been on a book club kick recently, but I honestly don't think we would have to only discuss diabetes books (they can be really boring sometimes). If you have any ideas for specifics, i would welcome them!
Depending on the time and place, and whether you're limiting this to T1s, I might be able to convince my Other Half for us to join up for a few hours (we're in central New Jersey)... We're both T2s -- he's on metformin; I'm on diet-and-exercise.
everyone is welcome!

My favorite idea is for us to meet at the park and follow it up with coffee or something. that way we stay remotely in shape, have social interaction and also get some good java.
Hi lane, Philly has a great Walk for Diabetes in the Fall and Spring. I did it alone last year, and I'd love to
get a group to go.
also I'm interested in the coffee, walk, just meet time .
Good luck getting a new home.
Mary
great idea. I'm up in bucks county and am married w/ two toddlers so it'd take some planning but I do run and stuff as well as love good food.
sweet! the more the merrier.
Hello there. I hope you don't mind my jumping into this discussion. I live in Northeast Philly. It might be nice to meet up for a picnic in Burholme Park in the picnic shelter along Central Avenue above Cottman Avenue. I think parking shouldn't be too much of a problem there, but I can check that out since I live nearby. Sundays are usually better for me than Saturdays. Perhaps we can do this in June or later this month.

Btw, I am new to Tu Diabetes, but have been a type 2 diabetic since 1994. I'm 56, married, no kids but 3 cats & a dog. Switched from oral meds to 100% insulin recently. Had 3x cabg last April.
