I am a 38 yr old runner starting the mini med this coming wend. I am worried about lows while running long distances 2+ hours. Any info and encouragement would be really helpfull. Thanks in advance Kevin

I am not a runner( ha, ha ) and I have done full and 1/2 marathons ....so I want to congrat and encourage you ...When I do more than 1 hour training sessions : I set my temp bolus on 45 percent about 2- 11/2 hours prior to training ( and ultimately the EVENT ) and about 1 hour after finishing ...be aware , the BG my climb about 3 hours later, followed by low 24 hours later ....a correction bolus maybe in place or not ??.I wear CGMS ...this helps to see the trend as I am moving along and fewer finger pokes !!.Don't forget to carry fast acting glucose pills . I am not fast , so a half M.may take me over 3 hours and I eat 1/8 of a glucerna bar every 20 plus minutes . Not everyone may agree on the type of bar, however it works for this girl .
Oh, I need to ad: I am almost 69 and will participate in the Vancouver, BC, Canada Marathon May 3 , followed by a half M. in Victoria, BC , October 11, 2009 ...lots of good advise will come your way , I am sure : pumper nel .

Honestly Kevin, and this is just me. But I take my pump off while exersizing. I have never seemed to need it for that hour +.
The beauty is, you can wear it and just lower your basal rate per hour. You can take 1/2 the normal if you want. Just play with it, but is awesome, because you can instantly stop taking insulin in you want to by turning it off.
I hope this makes sense, let me know if you have more questions.

thank you very much for the info. This will be a learning experiance. I am running a 20k the thirtyth of may. Then the end of the summer a full marathon and if I can find a good one sooner maybe more. I am just a little nervous about my soon to be pump. thanks again Kevin

Useful information in " Diabetes Athlete's Handbook" by Sheri R.Colberg, PhD...your guide to peak performance . The writer has diabetes since 1968.
I do not disconnect my pump : one still needs basal insulin , when exercising , just like people without diabetes

Kevin,how are you making out with pumping and running ; did you get to read the book at work . ...how about an update ??
Another good source of information is Chris Jarvis's blog ...he is a ( Canadian ) Medtronic pump user , Olympic Rower and does marathons and cycles . His e-mail address is info@Ichallengediabetes.org . As a matter of fact both Chris and I will be at the Victoria ,BC, Canada Oct. 11 marathon ...he will do the full , 1/2 for me for Team Diabetes Canada.
