TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

Hey all, I am going back on this pump. After having many problems and realizing that I had defective quick sets that are being recalled..well I need to evaluate all this again. I've done a lot of research and it seems like people seem to like the SURE-T's the most. But before I change I wanted to get some feedback from all of you. What infusion set do you use and why do you think it works for you? I've always had issues with the quick sets way before they were recalled. I didn't enjoy the silhouettes but I do remember they did work as expected. I'm relatively thin with a little belly..but I'm working that off. I do know that the silhouettes would probably be painful in my thin thighs though. Thanks!

I use the silhouettes. You can manually insert them at a comfortable depth and if I believe correctly they are supposed to be for people with "less belly fat". I'm curious why you don't like them? When I was first learning to use the pump many years ago they sent me the quick sets which neither my trainer nor I cared for. Since I've had diabetes for many many years my stomach skin is well used and the quick sets would not insert properly so I changed to the other and have been using them ever since.

Thanks Linda, I don't hate them I just remember them being a bit painful but I may have been doing it wrong.. Insert them manually? I never thought about that. I do get a little weak sometimes at the thought of shooting a needle in me with the serter. I am using a silhouette now and it's been great. I will probably stay with the silhouettes in all honesty but I am rather curious about the SURE-T's. What length needle do you use for the silhouettes and do you have much scarring with them? Do you notice any absorption difference with them depending on where you put it?

Hi Scott,
I didn't know that there were different needle lengths with the silhouettes? Mine look long when I pull it out but I've been diabetic for 48 years so these things don't make me flinch anymore! The only times that I have absorption problems is when I leave the set in too long (over 3 days) and the same goes for any scarring (only when left in too long). I don't know anything about the SURE-T's. What are they like? Does the needle stay in them? (Ouch!)

Yes it's a small metal needle cannula that stays in. I've heard some people with these have to change them out every 2 days instead of 3. But I hear the control is better because of less complications than a regular cannula..but I'm not quite sure why that is, maybe because it's a little more fixed. However, from researching the majority seem to prefer the SURE T's because of insertion and control. I'm guessing from everything in the end it looks as if I'm just going to have to try them all out and decide for myself which one I prefer, maybe I'll prefer more than one.

Hi Scott,

You may want to have a look at a review I did of a number of different infusion sets. I personally decided to stay with the Quicksets for normal day to day use, but have some of the others as a contingency.

Cheers,

Henry.-

Thanks D and The Guy, I feel a little reluctant going back to the quick sets, I was thinking maybe I should try the 9mm as opposed to the 6mm however. I may have to do like nel says below and just try them all out. I can tell you that I have a silhouette in now and its been working great. A little to great..I will be fasting tomorrow to fine tune my basal and sensitivity levels.

When i was still on the CoZmo, i went through several different sets over a month trying to figure out which i liked the best, and eventually settled on the Animas Inset 90-degree. Now that I have the availability of the ADR reservoirs that provide a luer-lock connection on the paradigm platform, i'm going to go back to the insets after i finish my last 2 months of Quicksets

After pumping 8 years I can truthfully say : I tried them all ...the last 3 plus weeks have felt like heaven on earth : less maintenance, better overall numbers, less frustration (ask my Hubby ) , more economical (not the biggest plus : we have a good extended health benefit plan, but I have a backround of being frugal !!) , less pain even when I wear tight jeans , put in manually ...you probably guessed it : SURE-T 's do it for me . It does not appear that the Canadian MM market fell victum to the recalled sets you had to deal with . I consider myself thin and with " some muscle " . When I notice, that BG's are on the rise , 3 hours after insertion , I carefully remove the set and place it nearby ...I do not require tape; you may .Happy returns to pumping Scott.!!
PS Pumper Dave is receiving credit for this ...Thanks, Dave once again .

Nel...do you mean you can remove a Sure-T and re-insert it somewhere else? Have you heard of anyone having an allergic reaction to the metal cannula? I would like to try them...especially w/ the recall and issues I have had w/ the Quick Sets. I loved them at first...no adhesive reactions (did w/ Sils, etc.), stayed put, no pain or allergic reactions. Lately I have noticed they do not stay put as well and will tunnel. I have been pumping a long time as well...trying to figure out why I am having problems that frustrate my otherwise good control. Thanks for anything anyone can share on the topic.

I've been on the Sure-T's for the last month now and I like them much better then the quicksets. You can take them out a reinsert them if there is a problem but of course after 3/4 days you need to change the set out with a new one regardless. It takes time to adjust (not much) but they are so much easier and my control is so much more stable. I barely have any reactions to the metal cannula like I did with the plastic ones, in other words I seemed to have more of a reaction with the quicksets than with the sure-t's. Now I just need to get rid of the quicksets that I currently have-I'm done with them.

Thanks Scott:) just what I needed to know. I get really frustrated w/ bgs going up...troubleshooting and finally pulling the set to find it bent! or insulin tunneling back around the cannula! I think I will give the Sure-T's a try.

Apologies for not responding sooner Patricia ...but here goes: I do remove the Sure-T set about 2 1/2 days later , close to the original spot . I have no reaction to the metal ...I have noticed a small bruise at times after removal , no different from using the other type of infusion sets.
When I told my Pump Nurse , that I had read about the Sure-T's her comment was : do you really want a needle in you for that lenght of time ?
It will be 3 months in early Oct. since I changed ; also time for an A1C soon . result of which may not be too different, however I seem to be a much happier camper .Ask Hubby ...this is important ;-)
