I’ve been a diabetic since 82, and just found out about this group for Minimed’s Paradigm pump, so looking forward to some great conversations and education.

Is anyone else so completely frustrated with the way they’ve programmed much of this RTGM pump, that they want to make a significant investment in trying to figure out how to jail break it so we can program it to do what it should? Especially the way it maps ISIG values to glucose values with calibration. It just makes me want to screeeeem!! Can anyone even understand whatever terrible thing it is doing? (i.e. even after multiple calibration, it still has way wrong numbers and backwards trending!!)

P.S. Does anyone have any idea when any pump manufacturers are going to stop being selfish, and start making pumps / RTGM systems that are controlled by and display data via smart phones? At least with such, they could implement some kind of security!

Way beyond my limited technical capabilities, but I like the way you think! And I agree we should have some kind of cell phone options.

I don't know if it is jail breakable, but it does have a firmware version on it. Has anyone every had their firmware updated?

they've got to have some kind of development environment, possibly with a hardware simulator. If we could some how get our hands on that, it'd be real easy.

Anyone know any engineers that worked on any of this?

Good questions about updating firmware. Anyone done that?

And can anyone figure out how this freeken system maps ISIG numbers to sugar numbers?

Whatever it is doing just drives me crazzy!

I may have the answer to part of your question.
When I upgraded my PC to Win 8, I found my USB device for uploading my pump info to to Carelink no longer worked, I sent an email to Medtronic's support to ask if they had a time line when it would work again. This is the answer I got

"Dear Eric,

Like other software companies, we begin testing with Beta version of a new OS (like Windows 8) but can only complete the development process once the final version of the software is released. However, unlike many software companies, CareLink is considered “medical device software”. Therefore, once the testing is complete, it is still required to go through government regulatory processes, which can take several months. This creates a time lag between the release of a new OS and our new version of CareLink. I know this can be frustrating, but the development, testing and regulatory approval process are designed to protect the safety of people like you who rely on healthcare software to manage their diabetes. Please know that Medtronic does everything we can to get new updates to the market as soon as possible and will keep you up to date on when we have support available for the newest operating system. In the meantime, please consider postponing the upgrade to Windows 8 in order to continue using the CareLink Personal site."

Reading between the lines here, basically the FDA has to approve any changes to any of the software, firmware and hardware. I don't know what would be so hard to get approval for copying info from one place and pasting the same info to another. Can you imagine the what kind of approval process it would take for me, and thousand other pump users to have a little bit of control of the calculations for a dose of insulin?

Right. That was my thought. It's possible "jailbreaking" it could be done. But at what cost? Some might get in serious trouble if they started using a medical delivery device that had been altered somehow...

And I always like to add the “YET” on the end, as I have faith that all things will soon be possible – especially to the degree that we all work, hard, for such, and not just sit back and wait for it.

These manufactures, and effing governments that get in the way, need to learn they need to provide robust interfaces to the underlying hardware, and validate that, and leave the rest, especially reporting stuff, so we can make an app for, and do anything we want with it.

So how is me getting into the firmware, and hacking it so it doesn’t use their effing trend warping conversion junk, so that it just displays the raw ISIG numbers, so I can get good trending information, going to hurt anyone!!??

Oh, and by the way, is anyone else totally ticked off by the “t:slim” advertisements, like I am??? I mean, if they removed all the bulk for the effing ‘color display’, the controls and the battery required to power all that, and just included a simple blue tooth link to a smart phone (encrypted, of course) imagine how much effing “slim”er such a pump could be!! And infinitely easier to use – on top of that!!

Oh, wait, I forgot – that would be too simple (i.e. cheap) of a device, and they couldn’t bleed all us diabetics for as much money, so why try to do that!!?? So we’ve got to push for this, or it’ll take waaay to long. Let’s not wait!

It is all far to easy to complain when things are not done to suit the way we want things (sour grapes) and especially easy when you are not the one that will likely be held responsible.

In today's society where people sue over even the most pathetic of things I am not surprised that pump companies are reluctant to release information/control out for people to 'tinker' with, they'd be sued left right and centre and go out of business. The older our 'civilization' gets the more childish it gets.

It sounds like you think someone else will be held responsible for me jail braking my pump, even if I did somehow hurt me or anyone?? You are definitely pointing out possible problems - I suspect you faithlessly think there are no solutions to any of these things you perceive as problems?

I can see how what I'm saying sounds like I'm complaining. I fully realize why we have stringent controls, and am thankful for the good they do. I mean it more of fact stating and a faithful rallying cry that we can do better, if we all do more than just sit around, being satisfied with things as they are, and waiting.

Oh, and if there is true justice, then I think nay Sayers, holding things back in this world, as they faithlessly only talk about problems, rather than working for solutions to such, will have to make a restitution for such sins. And till that occurs, true justice will not exist - right?

Brent, I agree with your sentiments 100%. But medical devices don't exist in the same universe as a jail-breakable smartphone. To me one of the biggest downsides of T1 is being sucked into the medical, insurance, and FDA bureaucracies. Sometimes I imagine what it would be like if a pandemic virus rendered almost everyone T1. It is a sure bet that pumps (and other aspects of managing T1) would immediately evolve into something far better!

i would draw the line at smart phones having read only access, however to do that it would still need to authenticate against the pump. that opens the door to get into the pump, no matter how good the security is. and yes the FDA is slow slow slow

not that there aren't wireless controls for some pumps already, but i guess they're not connected to the internet so considered safer?

i've heard that the sensors can be over calibrated / confused.
i think this is partly because there's such a variance in the test strips
and partly where the sensor is insterted.
i found that if i get the sensor in a bit of fatty tissue (no bleeding) that there is a lag between interstitial fluids and blood
however if the sensor went in a i bleed a little then it's more accurate / responsive but it's only good for a couple days until clotting makes the sensor useless.

and then there's "striking oil" ... i'm thinking about getting a home tatto kit so i can label Don't Put Sensor Here

It my be a coincidence but when i started using my thigh for the sensor my readings are almost spot on. When i was using my belly the #'s were way off.
