Has anyone seen the recent news concerning the ability of testers to hack into Medical Implant Devices (including Insulin Pumps). Apparently they wer able to "reprogram" a pump device from as far away as 300ft, instructing the pump to deliver its entire Insulin content in one go, this without ever having to ID themselves, or the pump device. This sounds pretty scarey to me.

I've heard a lot about this and somewhere on this site there is another post saying that medtronic is seriously investigating this. I've read that it's only been possible to suspend the pump (still dangerous but not as bad) and that the same idea of hacking has been applied to pacemakers a few years ago. I think it's a issue, but honestly it took the guy who did it months to figure it out and the big question is who would want to spend that time figuring out how to do it, finding someone with an insulin pump, and then hack into it? I think it's just starting a large paranoia. The FDA knows, so if anything it will just take longer for then to clear devices now.

The BBC story suggests the hack was completed by someone from McAfee, in less than 2 weeks. Who would want to hack into something like this?? I'd say anyone who has in penchant for hacking into sites for no other reason than they are there to be hacked...it happens all the time.

Urban legends........that's all false info.

I wouldn't say it was urban legend, the story comes from a pretty ligitimate source, the BBC (see the link in my original message).

It is scary I think they are fixing the trouble though.
This hole in the security has allowed me to use my Dexcom sensors with my MM pump.
I'm guessing that is not going be possible for long. Any I only did it to use them up.
I think though that the Dexcom sensors and the MM pump is the best combination. I found the ease of use and the accuracy the best of both worlds.

Neither device is FDA approved for using the others sensors , I just wanted to say that.

Regarding the urban legend, It is not a legend. If your pump has the remote option activated, then someone can easily tap into your pump.
Still Most pumps have a limit to the amount you can deliver. Mine is set to 8 units. Even if someone hacked it they would only be able to deliver 8 units.

Besides, is it worth an attempted murder rap just to do something stupid like that?
