Im new here so I hope Im doing this right. I'm wondering how all you MM pumpers deal with water activities. I really want to go on vacation to Cancun and snorkel, water parks, river raft, and so much more. I feel so limited and afraid with my pump. Take it off, bolus for what I missed or prebolus? I feel Im always chasing the BS dragon with that and suffer with alot of highs and lows. Last year at the lake in Texas the pump got to much miosture and it broke, 24 later I had a new pump but that was stressful waiting on that and we had to leave the lake early to go find some Lantus, I sure was popular that day. Not sure how that would work out of the country. So Im looking for some tipa and trick. do you use a water proof pouch? Do you use the old needle and long and short acting insulin? Do you just stay home and wish you were floating down the beautiful river like me? Thanks Kim

There are several waterproof pump cases on the market. One of the best is "Aquapac pump case". Check on eBay for 65.00. Works great and not to costly. I kayak and get very wet all the time and never have a problem.
Have fun and use sunscreen :).
Hi Kim, I struggled with this too while on my honeymoon in Hawaii. I would take a small bolus before I disconnected to go in the water. If I knew I would be out for 1 hr, 2hrs or whatnot I would bolus just about what my basal amount would be for that time. It worked pretty well for me, not perfect but I didnt have any terrible highs even after being off my pump for over 3 hrs. Best of luck with figuring out what works for you! Share with us how it went and what you used!

Permalink Reply by Kate's Mom on May 29, 2012 at 4:30pm Funny you should ask! We are planning a trip to the Bahamas and will be staying at a resort with water park etc. My T1 daughter wants to do everything and I am trying to figure out how to manage it all. First, we will go CGM free part of the trip so she can swim with dolphins etc. I'm bringing Lantus and flex pen novolog for backup...but will try to keep her on her pump as much as possible. Sure wish MM had a tubeless patch pump...I'm told it is in the works...someday! I'd like to know of a water proof pouch! Would be handy while floating on a "lazy river" so we can reconnect her to her pump at the end. I just went and ordered an Aquapac case...should be here on Thursday. I'll test it and let you know.

Permalink Reply by Sweet Lady on June 11, 2012 at 5:58pm After many years of shots, I got my first pump about 10 years ago. I ruined 3 of them on vacations before I made the decision not to wear a pump in water. Instead, I bring a small ice pack to put in my beach bag. Then I remove the pump and put it into a baggie and place it beside the ice pack. Then I feel safe swimming and having fun. The only thing that makes me nervous is wondering if someone will try to steal it at the beach so I keep an eye on the bag. I don't worry about high blood sugars because any form of exercise makes me low. So if I keep the pump off for a couple of hours, I actually benefit. Hope this helps!
