Comment by diabud on February 11, 2012 at 3:22pm Unfortunately with the whole body scan there is pretty much no way to avoid the pat down. When I went through one, I snapped a little at the TSA agent who had to give me a pat down because she was about to firmly pat down my stomach. I told her to be very gentle because my CGM site is very sensitive. She was very respectful and then did the "cloth swab" thing where they gave it to me to touch my clothing over the CGM and Pump. However, when I have been at the airport I have never seen them body scanning everyone, so you can always hope to be one of the lucky ones who just goes through the metal detector. In which case, the detector doesn't go off because there is so little metal in it so if your pump isn't showing you can avoid it all.
Comment by Kate's Mom on February 11, 2012 at 1:41pm @Blessedlife--my daughter is 11 and has been using a CGM since June. Yes, it is scary to look at, but doesn't really hurt. Medtronic will have the Enlite CGM (smaller needle!) available within the next year in the US...already used in the rest of the world. The CGM is definitely worth it!
I've been pumping since last summer and was very apprehensive about popping the infusion sets into myself. Every once in awhile one will go in and will pinch a little but even those, and it's been maybe 3 or 4 in 6 months, hurt less than a shot. They're really not that bad. Most times I don't even feel them. Started on CGMS yesterday and yes, it looks even worse but really didn't hurt going in. There's a video on youtube of a maybe 8 year old kid putting in his own infusion set and he does it without a complaint at all. You can do it! Make sure you walk through it with your CDE. I have a real needle phobia (or did anyway) and this is easy. Nothing to worry about.
I use it. Doesn't hurt at all. Then again before the pump I injected myself 16-18k times. I like my pump :). It looks nasty, but it's not that bad. Don't worry about it.
Another question, that CGM, I saw a video someone posted of themselves inserting one and that thing looked painful to insert! The size of the needle! Gee whiz! Tell me that it is not THAT bad. I am beginning to think that the pump is the way to go and I am in agreement with my doctor, but the CGM needle gave me some pause. Input? Experience? Thanks !
I have decided to go with a pump with the tubing. I am down to the Medtronic MiniMed Revel and the One Touch model. I like what I have read about the Medtronic company, but I have read in a few places that people have issues with the Continuous Glucose Monitor. Any help? Thanks! Research continues. I also read that the One Touch model is more waterproof. I can deal with removing the pump to swim (I don't do it daily. Just for water aerobics classes) and bathing. I am learning that not all pumps that are available have the CGM, it seems like a great feature to have. For those of you that have/don't have it, please offer input. Thanks again!
As I've said many times...
TSA= thousands standing around
Comment by Marci on February 11, 2012 at 8:31am Do any of you wear sensors? and if so how does that play a role?
Comment by wallskev on February 11, 2012 at 8:30am I disagree with Dirdon in that the TSA agent, at their individual whims , can do what Dirdon says and just do a swap test or they can do a partial patdown, or a full patdown. I travel almost every week , and in the same ariports I experience all 3 types of activities.
If you don't want to risk a patdown and you have to go thru the webi scaner just take out your pump and show it to TSA before you go in. TSA will call someone over so when you come out they will have you rub it with both hands and then swab your hand and the swap get scanned with another machine and that will be it. I go thru all the time and someone with TSA told me this was the EASIEST was to do it and it is. I have never beeped when going thru metal scanner.
