Sometimes when this happens I stick it out but if it is really bad you can change the site. But you DO NOT need to waste the insulin! you can even keep your current tubing. Just insert the new site, disconnect the new tubing, attach your current tubing and just do a "fixed prime."

If you want to use the same reservoir but use the new tubing, just take the reservoir out of the pump and unscrew the tubing. Attach the new tubing to the reservoir. Rewind the pump, put in the reservoir with tubing, manually prime and fixed prime like you would if you had changed the reservoir too.

You shouldn't have to live with a painful site! ... The only reason I sometimes stick it out is that SOMETIMES you might get two painful sites in a row and then you have an "UGH" moment.

I changed my site yesterday and it hurt for the first time going in. Now it is very tender to the touch. Has anyone ever had this problem? Should I go ahead and change my site and waste all of the insulin? What to do? I have only been on the pump since Nov. 11.

I'd be lost without you. LOST, I tell you. Tudiabetes.com is getting frequent mention in my book!

This community is great for troubleshooting, isn't it? :) I can't believe that I used to be out there doing this on my own.

(Kudos to Melissa BL, you hit the nail right on the head without even seeing the problem!)

Hey guys, here's the way it shook out: after a high pressure test and a second conversation with a techie at Medtronic, we all came to the conclusion that the reservoirs were the problem - the seal between the reservoir and the plunger wasn't perfect and would slowly leak air. So they sent me new reservoirs and we tried again after the holiday weekend, and lo & behold, NO BUBBLES. So it appears that particular lot of reservoirs is defective. I'm sending them back and will get more from Medtronic.

many of the pump trainers are usually independent contractors (my mom is one, and she trains for minimed, animas, omnipod, accu-check spirit, and formerly cozmo)
they might have a bit more weight than you do, but don't count on it (unless you were trained by a minimed clinical rep, then they can usually help)

I assume that you got the pump through an insurance company which probably has not yet even paid for it. You should tell Medtronic that the pump is defective and that if they don't replace it, you are going to tell the insurance company not to pay. If they don't replace the pump immediately, call your insurance company and tell the not to pay until the pump is replaced.

I have also noticed that you make no mention of your pump trainer. I thought that medtronic supplied one for each pump. I know that my trainer intervened on my behalf with medtronic whenever I had a problem at the beginning. If you have a trainer, ask him or her to get involved. That is what they are there for. Moreover, the trainer can look at the pump and verify your problem.

I agree. It sounds like a pump malfunction. New at this or not, I can't think that user error would cause that much of a problem. I mean, it could be that you've got leaky o-rings in the reservoirs you received and they are letting air in, but that should also be something they suggest and trouble-shoot with you and offer to send a new lot of reservoirs to try. Sounds to me like a pump issue and I would demand they ship a new one.

If this is a constant problem (like happening with EVERY reservoir, and all tubing), it really sounds like something is wrong with the pump. Since you just started on Monday AND you have such a young child I really think you need to ask Medtronic to send you a new pump. There's no reason that you should have to go this. Just go into the conversation asking for a new pump, say you just got it, you want to exchange, etc... there's no reason that he should have to have so many highs while you troubleshoot. Sometimes it takes a few tries, but you'll find someone at Medtronic who can help you. Are you talking to the 24 hr-help hotline? I've heard that more often than not, they'll just send a new pump. Be assertive! and good luck!
