Hi everyone,
I joined here about 1.5 years ago when I was first starting to be pro-active about what the deal with my blood sugar was. A little info:
Age:33
5'1" 104 lbs (always been thin)
Diet controlled gestational diabetes 2x
Infertility problems, irregular cycles, etc
Dad and dad's mom are both type 2
Well it took me a year and a half but I finally made an appt with an endo, really hoping to get a firm diagnosis. She sent me for all the usual labs and these were the results
a1c - 5.0 (wow! I have been 5.3, 5.4 and 5.7 in the past 5 years)
fasting 79
C-Peptide was .62 (range was .48 - 5.0)
and my 2hr reading on the 2 hr OGTT was 190! (200 or higher is type 2)
and all the antibody test for type 1 came back negative (not type 1)
Of course she was shocked with my a1c and fasting so low, to see the result of the OGTT.
I eat REALLY low carb. My diet is mostly green vegetables, lean meats, nuts, and some dark chocolate. If I eat a real serving of any kind of bread, rice, oats, etc my reading wills be over 140 at two hours.
I also exercise a lot. The endo said she figures I'm pre-type 2 and just told me to keep doing what I've been doing. She didn't seem to know much about MODY.
I feel glad that I'm lucky in able to control my numbers so well with diet and excercise but I was a little bummed that I didn't get a real diagnosis...she told me I wasn't normal and I wasn't diabetic. thanks!
This was the first c-peptide test I've ever had to my knowledge so the results told me what I figured based on my reasearch...I don't make much insulin!
All my research leads me to belelive i'm probably MODY3. I don't want to spend $3500 to prove myself right but it does make me feel a little better to know what I most likely have. Also, since I have 3 young children, it'd be nice to know for sure since one or more of them will have most likely inherited it.
Anyways, enough talk about me but I hope to stick around here a little bit and particpate. Also, any input or feedback is always appreciated and I'll try to do the same.
Greetings from Texas,
Jennifer

I am also considered PRE ....that overlooked grey area.LOW crp.Paternal & maternal family ties. Sadly, the way insurance is now....I would rather manage myself w/o the label as long as possible! I have high readings 1-2 after meals.Perfect FBG. A1c 6.2. 5'10 /145# & exercise like a fiend. I eat pretty much like you.I am also pretty sure MODY3.
Greetings from Massachusetts ! Mary

Permalink Reply by SilverLining on February 20, 2012 at 2:23am Hi Jennifer...I also think I am MODY 3...very thin, normal FBG, high spikes with carbs; I am currently diagnosed prediabetes. My grandmother and father diabetic as well. Here is the important part, due to some heart palps (PVC's) I had a heart specific CRP lab test taken last summer and it came back .18. This is a very low value. Last month, I read that a very low hs-crp (heart specific CRP) is highly correlated with MODY-3. It is a cheap test, you might want to ask your doctor for it, or buy it yourself for around $40.
Permalink Reply by Flowerjen on February 20, 2012 at 11:35am Thanks for that tip I may look into it. I've also read that MODY-3 patients tend to show sugars in their urine at relatively low BG levels than would be expected (around 140). Test strips for these are very cheap so I may try that next time I have a BG around that.
Permalink Reply by SilverLining on February 20, 2012 at 2:52pm That is another good idea. April, who is a member of this group, is diagnosed with MODY3 (lab confirmation)and does not spill glucose early. I don't know what to make of that other than to think it doesn't happen to all patients. Keep us updated! :)
