TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

Greetings all.

Ok, I will admit it. I am very new to this site. I've been a diagnosed diabetic for about a decade. But most of that time has been as some one who was alone in the struggle with this disease. You combine fear, denial, lack of insurance at times, and you got a perfect storm for complications. Well I had my wake up call this january, with a bout of diabetic ketoacidosis. So now I am taking things seriously and not just ignoring it and hoping it will go away. If anything, the only thing that will end up going away, with that attitude, is me.

So I think that meeting with people like me, who have the same struggles, similar troubles, and understand that carb counting isnt just a once in a while kind of thing anymore, would be good for me and perhaps good for them too.

Now the questions become, when and where. This is where my first problem arises. I don't know what your schedules may be, but I am a second shift worker. Getting out of work between 11pm and 1230am makes they usual 7pm to 9pm meetings impossible for me on week days. After those hours about the only place to meet would be an all night dunkin doughnuts (I'm thinking not the best place to have diabetics meet) or a denny's. If you have alternatives, I'd be grateful to hear them. Weekends may be a possibility, as I have the second and fourth and if they have one, the fifth weekends of the month open. It would be nice to sit down, and break bread (or the 15 gr carb equivalent), and share our experiences.

I live in central CT, (New Britain) but am willing to travel about 45 minutes to an hour away. What do you think of setting up a meet and greet? Would you prefer a weekend evening, late at night, or a first thing in the morning breakfast gathering? Any suggestions as to where to go, for good food, reasonable porttions, and enough tables to accomodate every one that would want to attend?

How about where to have this? Southington? Manchester? New Haven? Sturbridge, Ma? Waterbury?

If I can get a concensus of who would be interested and where you are comming from we could try to pick someplace close.

I am your humble and obedient servant,

Radical Yellow Duck
aka Matthew

I always think breakfast gatherings are the best. I'm in northern Massachusetts, which is a bit too far to join you.

Try to connect with other members in CT/RI/NY and see if you can get a gathering going. I always find these informative and fun. It's nice to be at a get-together and not be the only person with diabetes!

Hello Dan and Susan,

Well if we are to keep things on the east side of the river for susan and as far north as possible to bring you in, then Enfield would seem to be a good location. I grew up there so that I am very familiar with the area.

A breakfast on a saturday seems to be the option of choice. My suggestion would be bickfords, at 7 Hazzard Ave, (rt 190) in Enfield. It is right off the highway and has a full menu plus breakfast buffet on the weekends. It used to be an abdows big boy, if you are familiar with the area.

Now the question is how early or how late, do you want to stay up / get up? And how much notice shall we give? This saturday? Next saturday?

Naturally anyone else that would like to come along would be welcome.

Matthew

Matthew ,
Bickfords is fine with me. I know how to get there! This weekend is out for me, Women's BB Big East Tourny! I won't know until the beginning of next week about the next weekend. Craig lives in S. W. Maybe he is interested also.
By the way, in the small world department, I work with Elaine, your sister in law!! I am the cafeteria para in the same school where she is a para and I told her I was diabetic in case there was a problem. She then told me she was familiar with the disease because her brother in law had it. After Christmas I asked her how you had handled the holidays, they were hard for me, and she told me you ended up in the hospital. After our conversation last night I started to think about it so today I asked her her brother in laws name. When she said Matthew I told her I thought we had just conversed. She was amazed!
Keep me updated on a get together, I think it is a great idea. Sue B

Small world is right Sue! What are the odds of that? Now if u tell me you work at Eli Terry that will not just be a small world but a miniscule microscopic world.. lol
Bickfords works for me, as far as time goes, I can make it about any time on a weekend but prefer that if it is in the morning , when the sun is warmer, like a brunch sort of thing.that is when they have the best French Toast..... Did I write that? I saw my fingers typing but wasn't sure... LMAO! Oh my I crave Fench Toast something awefullll!!!!! When I joke about having someone fixin' me something to eat those are the words that come out first. :o) haha maybe that's something to address in this "suport" session.. Any cravings Sue B?
The owner where I work used to buy a huge 5 pound box of pecan turtles from Munson's across the street at Christmas time and the kind of guy he was, knowing that I was just diagnosed as diabetic bought me a pound of Sugar Free Chocolates, so I ate a couple during work had a couple more before I left work.. (hey they are sugar free right, what the heck) I was so lucky there weren't any traffic jams on the way home because by the time I got home , my stomach was making noises that I have never knew a stomach could make, hehehehhe btw, if you ever have sugar free chocolates eat them in moderation! The chocolates contain maltose and like what I failed to read on the box in very fine print.. "may have laxative effect".. DOH!

Hi Matthew aka RYD,
I live in South Windsor, CT and was diagnosed with T2 in September. For whatever reason, and against all expectations, I have followed the carb rules and fianlly admitted I needed cholesterol medicine. I would love to meet and chat and support. I think the reason that I have done so well is #1 because I am a control freak and refuse to be done in by this stupid disease and #2 because I have had alot of support. My family, coworkers, friends, everybody has been wonderful, but I have to tell them to get the support. I am also vain enough to be thrilled with the weight loss. I work days but Friday or Saturday night, even late, or Sat or Sun morning are good times for me. I am not really thrilled with driving through Hartford at night so this side of the river is better for me. Vernon diner is open 24 hours and has a nice fruit plate!
Of course the Women's basketball Big East Tournament is Friday through Wednesday and we have tickets as we did to all of the XL Center games this season. Go Huskies!! Please know there are people out there to help and support. Remember we are stronger than Diabetes!! Please keep in touch. Sue B

I think Bernard's suggestion is a good one. You might want to start by coming into Boston on Sat March 14 to spend the day at the ADA EXPO. You will have a good opportunity to meet lots of PWD and maybe a few from your area. Another suggestion is to go to the EXPO in Hartford on Sat April 18. You could plan to meet some people there from this group.
Check it out.

The Expo Center sounds like a pretty cool thing to check out Florian, thanks for the heads up.
I live in S.Windsor Ct. and as much as talking to people I don't even know yet , about a disease that I will be living with for the rest of my life , would be very awkward for me at first , it just might be nice to get out and chat with people who are going through the same thing as I am going through and have gone through , through out the years.

Meetups are a great idea! :)

If you do decide to organize one, please post it as an event (to do so, click here). This will make it show up on the main TuDiabetes home page as the date approaches!!

Hello Again All,

Ok, the Enfield location seems to be ok for most. At least no one seems to object. Susan cant make it on the 7th. Does anyone have objections to Saturday the 14th?

Mornings seem to work for everyone and craig wants it to be sunny. I work in the astronomy department, not meteorology, but I will put in a request for clear skies. We will see if it can be scheduled. As for a time I would like to suggest between 9am and say 11 or 12. That way we may be able to take advantage of not only the breakfast buffet, but the lunch one too.

If no one objects I will see about posting this as an event.

(note to self, remember the pecan pies are to held at arms length and not to be inhaled)

lol I ment when the sun is warm, meaning higher in the sky(later morning).
RYD wants to go there not just for the breakfast buffet but also the lunch one. LMAO!! YEAH!
If you get the pecan ( and I am hearing you say it as PEEE- CAN right? not puh-kon right?)
Then I get to have the French Toast with extra grade A maple syrup!
Saturday the 14th is better than Friday the 13th... Two months in a row we have had Friday the 13ths

I'm north of Boston in MA so I'm a wee bit far myself. But I think its a great idea to find a group that you can meet with. Expos are a great way to meet people as well.
