Hi there everyone

My name is John, living in the Sacramento, North Highlands area

I just got diagnosed about 3 weeks ago as type 1 diabetic and just started taking

Insulin injections right away. I'm pretty new to it all and am looking to meet people

in my area to talk to and learn what I can from.

So far I've been pretty alright in keeping up with a decent diet since I've

been out of the hospital, but I'd really like to meet other Type 1s in the sacramento

area. looking forward to talking to you all, and I hope to make a tone of friends here!

thanks and talk to yall soon

Welcome, John. I saw your post on the main board. I'm in the Bay Area, so can't help you with real time. I'm actually going to meet my first Type 1 realtime acquaintance later this morning!

Hang in there; there is a lot to learn at first and it can be overwhelming. I'm sorry you don't have the ability to get good medical help. I was misdiagnosed as Type 2 here in California shortly before I retired to Guatemala. In a little over a year I realized something was off and my doctor in Guatemala didn't have a clue, so I began the long road of research to figure out I was a Type 1 (LADA). I did see an endo but she just prescribed set doses for mealtime insulin. So I read on here, got Using Insulin by John Walsh and figured out myself (with support online) how to do an I:C ratio and figure doses. That's really a more up to date way to dose than sliding scale, and helps you gear your insulin to what you are actually eating. So use the 15,000 diabetics on here for support and you'll get there! I agree with what others said to you that if you are as low as 54 before meal, to take some glucose tablets and get back up before dosing and eating. For me, two tablets work fine. You might have to play with your basal dose; if you are going that low when you are due to eat you probably have the basal (long acting) set too high.
