Hi All - I am the parent of a college student with Type 1 - diagnosed when she was 4 years old.  As a teen she was prescribed Symlin and used it successfully.  She then went off to college and didn't want to bother with it - but now would like to start using it again.  Here is the problem - when she had her prescription before it was from a pediatric endocrinologist.  Once she turned 18 she had to find an adult endo - we have met with three different ones here in the Bay Area who all refuse to renew her Symlin prescription.  What is the deal with that?!   I think they are all worried about low blood sugars - and liability.  My daughter never had problem with Symlin-induced low blood sugars before (and btw - she has an insulin pump)  These docs make us feel like we are asking for some illegal drug rather than a hormone that my daughter needs!  So exasperating....

So - can anyone recommend a good endocrinologist at Kaiser?  We are willing to drive anywhere in the greater Bay Area.   This endocrinologist should be someone who is familiar with Symlin, realizes its importance and is not afraid to prescribe it!  Thanks....

Hi, sorry I can't help. But I have an insulin pump, but haven't heard of Symlin. What is it, what does it do?
Thanks!

Symlin is the synthetic form of amylin - the other hormone that your pancreas doesn't produce when you have Type 1. It helps your body use insulin effectively - and helps to prevent spikes in blood sugar after eating. There is a Symlin users group here on TuDiabetes - you can get more info there, or google "Symlin" to go to their website.
injected before meals used to smooth postprandial spike and reduce insulin requirements plus suppress appetite . Byetta for Type 2 is same thing
My endo Dr Eng in Oakland is a big supporter of Smylin. She know the two Kaiser docs in Okaland and would be good starting point 510-465-6700. You get those two names can you share with me? at amber@thetrollfamily.com I forget the details
Thanks for your response! If we end up going outside of Kaiser I will check out Dr. Eng (where is she located? in private practice?) I would be happy to pay out of pocket for an appointment - but the prescription needs to be written by a Kaiser doc in order for it to be covered - aaargh. And we are familiar with the endos in Oakland - Dr. Budayr and Dr. Peng. One of them we would NOT return to - did not even know that my daughter had diabetes until midway through the appt when I asked about getting an A1C!! Huh? Could you maybe, like, check your patient's file before you see them?! They thought we were only there to discuss thyroid issues - OMG....) - but maybe should check out the other one....thanks for the tip!!
I have Marc Jaffe (SF Kaiser) and he prescribes Symlin for me. I have more or less figured out how to use it by trial and error. It requires a special order.
Anne - I have been meaning to reply to your post - thanks for the recommendation for Dr. Jaffe - he was able to squeeze in my daughter while she was home on spring break - and is so awesome!! What a down-to-earth and knowledgeable guy. Yeah! I guess the lesson here is that if you are not happy with your endo to keep looking....he was the fourth one in a year..... And he prescribed Symlin - finally. My daughter is back on it now and loving it. Thanks so much for the recommendation!
Dr. Cabaccan in SJ. Great Doc. has two offices, one on Blossom Hill and one on White Rd. He prescribes Symlin.
