Hi,

baby is 7 1/2 months and we're breastfeeding still. Recently I am having severe pain with breastfeeding (nipples and breasts)... suspecting candida. Anyone have experience on this?

Haven't been monitroing blood sugar that closely lately, but it is pretty much in control.

Don't know whether to wait this out or try to see a Dr for some meds.

I don't have any experience with candida... But do you have redness or heat at all? Could it be plugged ducts?

Minor head and redness. Not blocked ducts am familiar with these - but no big lumps.

Anyway, saw Obe yesterday. She just said to use compresses and anti-inflammatory, though she did give me a sample of diflucan (treatment for yeast). Wants me to get a breast ultrasound to be sure nothing else going on....

I realize this is a bit late to reply, but if you're still having pain I would suggest taking a look at your baby's mouth.
If it's candida (thrush) then you and the baby will be constantly re-infecting each other.
if the baby has any white patches in her mouth that don't come right off when rubbed (so it's not just some old milk), and your nipples are VERY sensitive, then this is probably a case of thrush.
both you and baby should be treated with an antifungal cream - you on your nipples and in baby's mouth (of course, the baby cream is specific for use in the mouth, and not just a regular anti-fungal cream).

you should make sure to keep your nipples dry, so that the candida does not have a moist warm place to keep growing, and wash all of your undergarments at the highest temperature.

Hope this helps!

Hi Taligaga,

thanks. Baby doesn't have any obvious white spots in her mouth, but the symptoms are similar to what I had with my first baby. But the nipples were excrutiatingly sensitive and also shooting pains through both breasts, as well as I keep getting milk blisters (a sure sign of ongoing irritation).

Anyway, I decided to put myself on a course of diflucan (anti-candida) for 2 weeks. Today I am 6 days in and there is a definite improvement in pain levels - though still a way to go. Am hoping that the 2 week course will fix it!

My A1C went up a bit, so will also focus on better blood sugar control (the last few weeks have not been monitroing much) to make sure that there's no sweetness to keep these bugs around.
