I am 37 and 1/2 weeks now and have been having lows for the past week. Already decreased insulin by 5 units each basal morning and night. No highs. Got 42 after lunch today. At 2 bananas and an orange and only went up to 92.
Told my endo, he just said maybe reduced calories / change in hormones.
Read up on Lois Janovich. She says that reducing insulin requirement is normal at about 37 weeks and is due to the energy consumed by the contracting uterus (practicing to deliver). I certainly am having lots of practice contractions so this could make sense.
My obe doesn't seem concerned about the reducing insulin requirements other than to make sure I don't go too low. She is not really expert on diabetes it seems, whcih in a way is good, as she just lets my endo manage that side of things.
Will see her on Monday (at 38 weeks) and I guess we'll be discussing birth plan and whether to induce or not. she did say she would prefer me to deliver soon after 38 weeks. I would like the baby to come in her own time, if all else seems fine.
Yes, decreasing insulin needs are normal after week 36. My endo and OB-GYN were concerned that they started much earlier (but even that seems normal according to the replies that I got here and elsewhere).
Glad that you are doing so well!! Look forward to hearing the news :)
