Very HIGH blood sugars in Early pregnancy instead of LOWS?

Almost everything I've read says most diabetics experience a lot of lows and blood sugar drops during early pregnancy and that insulin needs will increase in later trimesters. I will be 6 weeks this coming Monday and my sugars have been sky high from the start. I'm up to a +50% basal rate on my pump. My blood sugars are under control and running 89-120 on that basal rate but without the insulin increase my sugars would be out of control.

Has anyone else experienced high sugars in early pregnancy instead of lows?

I noticed an increase in my blood sugars immediately! I had to increase my Lantus a couple of units and really watch what I ate from the beginning. It took me several weeks to understand what was going on, because I thought the same thing as you.
I never experienced the famous lows I had heard about. I hit some spikes at 6-7 weeks and had to increase my insulin. The rest of the pregnancy was one steady climb toward 180u or so per day. My endo said that it's not uncommon to hit the ground running like that.
180 units a day... wow. Thanks for the heads up lol
I started with highs and then hit the lows in week 8. I've heard that everyone is different like Melissa said she didn't have the lows at all. Good luck!
I also experienced early highs...once I hit around 7.5 weeks they started to come back down. Now I'm waking up LOW which is unheard of for me! ALso having more lows in general. I'm much happier trying to manage lower BS though :) I'm about 9 weeks now and they are still lower than normal.

Take care :)
I was the opposite.  I experienced extreeme highs early on.  For one, I was uncontrolled when I got pregnant and one day I woke up and my sugar levels were in the 400s-500s which was unusual even for me (i was used to seeing numbers as high as the low 200s).  No matter how much insulin I took, the numbers would not come down.  Thats what ticked me off that somethin was wrong and low and behold I was pregnant.  My endo worked with me right away and within a few days I started to see the numbers come down, but I was working really hard with the endo and beign very strict about my diet from then on.  I never saw the extreeme lows in the begining even when I got it under control.  Like some of the others here say, I didnt start seeing the lows until about week 10 or so.  I guess everyone is different.

Hi Queen five, I was reading about your highs early in your pregnancy, how was your birth? your baby?

I did the same thing this pregnancy I am currently 9 weeks along with my 3rd kiddo.  I hit the ground running this time.  I am already on about 120 units of humalog/daily and about 60 units of Lantus to cover things.....It has gotten better cause in the beginning I couldn't even hardly handle carbs without going over 200 :(  now I am usually 130 1 hour after meals and pre meals usually 60-100 :) but my mornings are still high....like 130 if I dont take insulin between 4 and 5 am.

that sounds like exactly what happened to me. i started to go high from weeks 3 or 4 to 7 or 8. then around weeks 7 or 8 things started to drop dramatically throughout the rest of the first trimester, and pick up later in the 2nd. good luck!

I'm thinking I might be pregnant? Idk I'm late but just a couple days and my sugars just started going up sky high like they usually do the whole week before I start my period so now I'm just thinking I'm going to start my period. I see some people on here had highs in early pregnancy and not the famous lows we all here about did any of you think you were gonna start bc you were having highs??

just curious

I really think I am going to start soon I'm not that worried about it.

My pre-period sugars average around 200-250. In early pregnancy my sugars were almost double that. Every time I checked, it would be 350-450! One time it was even 570, yikes! Are your your period highs, higher than normal? Ultimately, everyone is different so the only way to know for sure is to take a pregnancy test. Let us know how it goes. if you are pregnant you will have a great support system here! Good Luck :-)

You should take a pregnancy test. If you have already missed your period then it should show up by now.

I did have some highs in early pregnancy, but highs can be due to MANY things, not only pregnancy. My insulin sensitivity only started around week 9.
