Very HIGH blood sugars in Early pregnancy instead of LOWS?

Almost everything I've read says most diabetics experience a lot of lows and blood sugar drops during early pregnancy and that insulin needs will increase in later trimesters. I will be 6 weeks this coming Monday and my sugars have been sky high from the start. I'm up to a +50% basal rate on my pump. My blood sugars are under control and running 89-120 on that basal rate but without the insulin increase my sugars would be out of control.

Has anyone else experienced high sugars in early pregnancy instead of lows?

Nope not preggers, I was pretty sure I wasn't tho.

My pre-period sugars are just all over the place between 200-400 it's so hard to get em down I'm just trying to find my balance. It was that tho it was just real strange bc I was late and usually my pre-period sugar start going up a whole week before.. this time just like 2 days before.

Absolutely makes sense. It's normal in pregnancy for even women w/out D to develop some insulin resistance -- it's the body's way of making sure the baby gets "fed" first. Otherwise the mother's cells would take up all the glucose and there'd be none left for baby.
I am at 10 weeks and just posted about my crazy lows... I am spending so much time hypoglycemic these days that I'm surprised I haven't broken something in my brain. But, at 5-6 weeks I was not experiencing any of those lows *AT ALL* and in fact found that I was going high a lot (and really stressed about it). I don't know why, maybe the excitement / stress of finding out I was pregnant? Either way, these numbers started going down by week 7 and now at week 10 I can barely move without going low.

Just keep an eye on those numbers as they might be changing very soon!
My experience was the same. I am 16 weeks now and my insulin needs increased in weeks 5-9 and then dropped and actually have stayed low until now. I am taking about 75% of the basal insulin that I did pre-pregnancy. But I expect that will start increasing the next month.

Hi, I am currently 4 weeks pregnant with T1 Diabetes which I have had for 23 years. I am on an insulin pump and CGM. I have been experiencing some high sugars throughout the day and more high's after meals. I am very early in pregnancy and had a healthy daughter 1.5 years ago. My high risk doctor and endo are getting me in great control, it is just taking some time. I am positive that all will be ok, but very nervous since we have not gotten an US yet. Any thoughts?

Oh, me too, totally. I definitely had to up my basals immediately; I don't remember about my carb ratios. I started getting lows more like 8 weeks. Good for you for taking charge of it yourself; your needs will change so much, and so fast, that you really can't expect your doctor to do it for you.

I wonder: do you think they all say "OMG, watch out for lows early on!!" because the doctor's view of "early" is different than ours? Doctors -- ob's, anyway, not so much endo's -- often won't see you until you're 8 weeks, at which point you probaly *will* be going low.

I know I am so late on this post. But I was searching in the archives. I found out last week I am pregnant. I am about 5 and 1/2 weeks. I just started freaking out because I had a surprising 298 reading, for what seemed like no reason. I haven't been over 250 in weeks! Did you all have healthy babies? I am emailing my educator tomorrow, but I am just freaked out by every low & high now that I am pregnant.

I want to know what happen as well, I am running high, no matter how many times I correct through the day the numbers are stubborn, I had huge spikes the day i found out i was pregnant, it took me a whole day to bring it down and then that night I spiked again. Up 30% on my basal and still running high most of the time, so exhausted I'm tempted to up it to 50% like the OP and just do low corrections instead...

Guess what... I upped it to 50% with my nurse's guidance and in a couple of hours I was back to a normal range, but again this morning another spike! ugh I'm back to hovering on the 12's (300-350). I have yet to try what Heather suggested on the group's homepage. All I can do is look at my belly and tell the little peanut to hang on in there :/

I'm also experiencing highs and just cannot seem to take enough insulin for the little amount of carbs. I think I should also increase my basal rates- thanks for the suggestion ladies!
