OmniPod Users

This group is dedicated to giving OmniPod users a place to discuss and share our experiences so that we may grow and help each other "make diabetes a smaller part of our lives."

Please note: the exchange, sale or giveaway of items between members that require a prescription from a licensed practitioner, including insulin pumps and pump supplies, is not allowed on TuDiabetes.

We encourage you to donate supplies to non-profits such as the Charles Ray III Diabetes Association and Insulin for Life, which accept insulin pumps and pump supplies (as well as other diabetes-related prescription items).

You can also approach your physician's office or local medical groups to discuss donating them to those in need of assistance in your area.

It's not the size of the pod that will matter. It's the dex integration. But they are waiting to launch the smaller pods until the dex integration has cleared the FDA (last I heard...and I haven't listened to the latest Q1 call that Erik referred to so I'm not sure if it's any different now). I don't know what would be different in the pod to make it not communicate w/ the current 2nd gen PDM, but assuming that it does not, in fact, talk w/ the new pods, I'd wager they would have to have an upgrade program (or risk potentially losing every customer they currently have). I know that last part is a little dramatic, but you get the point :-)

They just said that replacement hand helds will be provided with next gen pod orders. Higher margin on the new pods will offset the hand held cost.

Your joking!?? I have only had my omnipod a couple of months! so Im gonna have to buy a new PDM to use the smaller pods?? why would the size of the pod matter for the pdm?

Next gen, smaller pods to require new PDM. Thought this was an interesting fact. I learned this today on the Q1 2011 Insulet Corporation Earnings Conference Call.

@MountainDolphin & KcF: I'm also a Mac user and Boot Camp is pretty handy, I used it in order to run software I needed for an algebra class. Worked like a charm. :)

One of the main things I think that Omnipods get a bad rap for is the fact that....everything that goes wrong.. that can't be explained......gets blamed on the pods by our Endos... So glad we have one now...that is able to see past the fact that my son is trying a "new type of pump" and looks at the things that go wrong...as exactly that.. .things that go wrong and tried to figure them out w/out just saying.."oh... it is the pod's fault"... Sometimes... all pumps have occlusions... all pumps have problems...even mechanical... I read those sites too.... The other day my son had a bad low... (from too much activity that he didn't think about as exercise)...and he was soooo scared that the new endo would do what the old one did..."take his pods away and make him go MDI".... I had to reasure him....no one is taking your pods away... He loves them...even when he has to deal the things that can go wrong.... but they make his life more free...and for that... I thank OMNIPOD...and the wonderful Pump instructor from Omnipod that is helping us. Making his life more free....is very important to a 16 yr old boy.

@KcF:
I'm a mac user. You don't actually need a separate Windows computer to use the Copilot SW. You can use Apple's (free) Boot Camp feature, which lets you install a Windows OS on a separate disk partition (you do need a legit installable copy of Windows, but you can get those pretty cheaply; it can be an older version like WinXP). It is a bit of a hassle because it requires rebooting the Mac to WIndows to use CoPilot, then rebooting again to OS X -- however, if you only say do that once every 1-2 weeks it's not so bad.

I actually also use virtualization software which lets you run Windows simultaneously with OS X (VWare Fusion and Parallels),however CoPilot running this way won't physically read the PDM data when connected to the PDM (everything else works), so I still do the reboot every couple of weeks.

Mac users - anyone thought of buying a bottom of the line non-mac to use with the copilot software?

Gil, there is a lot more to the story but it cost them my business.
Comment by Gil DePaula on April 13, 2011 at 6:54pm
Sandy,
If a few pods were beeping in the package, then it's a bad QA issue. But... if they were beeping, that means the software detected something was wrong with them. That's a good sign. That means you CAN trust its safety features.
