Has anyone explored the use of niacinamide to cure type 1 diabetes in the early stages or to prevent it? I am also seeing where it can be beneficial in reducing the amount of insulin needed in someone having it for years. I would be interested in what others know, has anyone tried this. If you haven't heard of it just do an online search of niacinamide and diabetes.

There was a large-scale intervention trial that tried nicotinamide (niacinamide, vitamin B3), and it was unsuccessful:

Although perhaps a different dose would have been more successful? Who knows. It didn't hurt either, so there may be no harm in trying. I haven't tried it myself, although I have taken B vitamins now and then. Vitamin D is another you might try, at least if you are deficient.
anything that can improve an immune system is worth trying. that includes vitamins. but with B3 I wouldn't try without a prescription because too much of it is reported to be dangerous for liver.
Hello - My 4 year old son has been on Niacinimide for about 3 months. Since his diagnosis in May of this year, I have been using multiple supplements recommended to help stablalize or lower blood sugars, so it is hard to tell which one is actually having an effect. The additional supplements are Fish Oil, DBS, Iron, Vitamin D, cinnamon and digestive enzymes in addition to the niacinimide. Of note . . . his carb ratio has continually gone up beginning at 1 unit diluted insulin per 5 carbs (at dx) to 1 unit diluted insulin to 9 carbs, which we are excited about in addition to his HA1C going down from 10 to 7.3. I would say something has been helping, just cannot narrow it down.

As far as the niacinimde in particular, I was cautioned about a red flushing of the skin with niacinimde which has not occured in our situation and my kiddo has no problem taking it. Our dose is 1/2 tsp twice a day.

As a Mom with a child with diabetes, I am willing to try just about anything, as I am sure many of you are.

Give it a try, what have you got to loose?
