TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

I was wondering how is "bloodglucose´s wonderworld" and school managing together?

Our son was 6 when ambulance took him hospital and he has deep poisoning already..13,5... and bloodglucose was over 30Mmol/l...
Then was a miracle he survive.
Now he is nine and third class at school. (that first year was that "year before real school"

But this isn´t what I firstly thought to write.
Then he was just start first schoolyear at little school where was only 17 students there comes "helpteacher" to hospital and learn also diabetic nursering. That was a really good thing and I know that this is not possible almost anywhere school in these times.
School was tiny and like big family, Bg´s and carbohydrates begin to be "easy" handle and etc.

now our kids moved to bigger school than the first, this is quite little also, about 300 students but the first word from teacher who was already teatched diabetic students was: "oh my god, Lasse has that pump, it really will be hard to keep BG´s in good level ´cos that pump gives insulin so little drops and no-one cannot know how it gives it and when...."
... and then I was thinking: "Oh my God and Goddes...."

There was some kind of difficulties at start.

That was really bless that Lasse can use pump himself so good and manage with it in original schooldays really good. But caring is stopped and my opinion is that nine years old boy still need adult with that ´cos diabetes is matter of life.
There at school is " law" that students wont have their mobilephones with and Lasse was really alone ´cos he was afraid that teacher goes mad to him ´cos he called home and asked BG´s and carbohydrate...and I was afraid how schoolday will past..
I told teacher that phone-episode and he was understand of course but boy wasn´t sure hat and other boys were not a good mood ´cos one have phone with...
But that was only sure way how Lasse can get adult´s opinion and help - calling home.
Now he has bg little bit high (7,7) and we must keep again diary about eating and bg and exercise and etc...you know... but Lasse is alone with that. I see from pump how bg was doing while day but I don´t know how much was eaten until bg is whatever it is... also I see insulin how much it is take but why? That cannot see from pump...

Lasse have some weigh coming also because he must sometimes eat extra garbohydrates, always he doesn´t remember that he must take pump -20% before jumpinghour...exercise mean..and if BG isn´t low, it often high... our original schoolday is kind of 3,0 - 18,7 bloodglucose...and its now not good. Becouse it comes and goes those mistakes what adult who can see what is going on can handle - but that adult is missing..

Lasse is a master with pump already, he can change infusionset etc himself (I sure watch and help if needed but he want to do it) but he also need and want adult to confirm what he is doing with these things at home and so he wait adult also at school.

How these things are with your schoolboys and -girls?

I wish you al and your familys have a bright ang springly week!!

I see you are in Finland. I don't know the laws regarding children with diabetes at school in Finland. Here we have 504 Plans, IDEA, but parents often have to fight the school system and fight hard to get the schools to follow the laws. I would bet your country is more progressive than ours, though. I would bet your child would be well taken care of. Not that you don't have to worry and keep in touch. My niece calls me on the phone before lunch, before and after gym and before she gets on the bus. From the nurse's office, but the nurse does not manage her, just oversees. This way, we always know what is going on, don't have to worry, don't have to guess, and yes, they have made mistakes in the past, so we feel this is the safest way to go.
