So....Naomi has been on antibiotics for 8.5 days due to an ear and sinus infection.  For the past few days she's been having a hard time with her meals and at first I thought it was behavior resistance to the new foods (whole wheat pasta, whole wheat bread etc...) but now I'm pretty confident this "pain" in her mouth she's complaining about is thrush. So...now that I feel horrible about it how do I treat it without having to cancel her playdate and take her to the DR AGAIN? She's so tired of going to the doctor. Does anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks!

Hi,
Call the doctor that prescribed the antibiotics and explain the symptoms. Depending on the Doc, he/she may just call in to the pharmacy nystatin oral suspension to treat the thrush and maybe some lidocaine viscous for the oral pain. Very common issue with antibiotics and should be easily treated. Good luck
Oh dear. Thrush varies in its intensity of discomfort---but it's unlikely to be contagious. Now, I can't be sure of most of the following for a child, so discount for that!.....I had 3 rounds of oral thrush a few years ago. The first 2 were absolutely the result of antibiotics and I took a prescription med that seemed to fix it. The third time, though, no antibiotics, just extreme emotional stress. So I tackled it myself with a Candida diet for 6 months. It seems hard at first, but you start to feel better pretty fast and so it becomes worth it. How long will vary & then you add foods back in slowly......Michael Murray, the highly regarded Canadian herbalist/nutrtionist was my guide---but you can study and adapt for your little one's needs.......Once you've got this "bug" in you, you need to pay attention for life. For instance, I was exposed to ringworm in my 20s and it's the same "bug" and probably why I am susceptibe in my 60s......Take care, my dear. Study up on Candida. You can do it and teach your Precious.....Judith in Portland....
We pair antibiotics with a probiotic now any time our children are on them. Alleviates the intestinal distress ABs can bring and we think it is also keeping yeast infections away. You can get them in capsules or powder, whichever your child prefers.
Thanks everyone for the comments/support, I really appreciate it! So our pediatrician called in an order for nystatin and I've picked it up. The documentation that came with it has a huge warning on it about how it can affect blood sugar levels and if you're diabetic to really monitor extra closely. Do any of you know if this is true? I'm not going to give it to Naomi yet since I'm not sure about it and....because when she got home from school I checked her mouth and I don't see a thing. I do think maybe she has it in her throat and that I just can't see it but I don't know for sure and tonight she ate just fine! Of course. Maybe it has flare ups day by day? Sometimes I feel like a hamster stuck in one of those balls that just roll around trying to figure all this out. :)

Will acidophilus or probiotics do anything to her bg levels or can I go ahead and give her those without hesitation?

Thanks again!!!!
Acidophilus is definitely good. I take it daily now. No problems with BS. But please do check interactions between OTC probiotics and other meds. Sometimes they war with each other---so with one you are killing the beneficial bugs in the gut and with the other you are trying to restore them---go slowly and do some research.....And sorry to be a drone----but read up on Candida. It's a drag, but there is also lots of hope there!....Best regards!.......
Ditto with Carol!
I don't know where you from, but Pink Honey works for thrush, I find it at Walgreen's always use a clean wash cloth and moisten it with the honey and clean her mouth. For the pain Tylenol usually help's.
