I got the TRUEResult meter for free from my pharmacy. A pack of 50 strips is just $28. I went in prepared to spend big bucks but the pharmacist had a better solution. It is a small, local pharmacy, not a big chain store.

Steve--You should be able to find a deal where you can get a rebate for the entire amount of your meter--they get your with the strips, that is true. I use a One Touch Ultra 2. I also have pre-diabetes but my endo wrote a prescription for strips so I can do four tests a day. You can also buy software for the One Touch Ultra 2 that lets you download your meter results and create charts/grafts/lists of your results. Good luck! Maybe it's a comfort to know you are not alone. Apparently 57 million people in the US have this!

Anyone have suggestions on an inexpensive/free meter that I can get? I'm pre-diabetic, so my health insurance won't pay for a meter or supplies... instead of my taking care of myself, they'd prefer I just slide into Type 2 so that they can start dispensing $ at that point. Kinda of crazy since i've begun exercising and watching what I eat (I don't need to lose any weight, though - 6-ft & about 170 lbs).

I hear that meters are pretty cheap or can be obtained for free, but the strips can be a killer. I want to start charting BG so that I can gradually refine taking care of myself. I don't, however, have a lot of money to fool around with, but who does? :-)

My grandfather was and my father is type 2. I have high triglycerides and my bsl are a little high as well. Looking after my health so I do not develop diabetes as well.

Nothing new to add to the group today though. Ordered a free OneTouch meter to start checking levels against what is considered pre-diabetes.

Will probably need some support if levels are elevated.

Thanks!
