Calling civil unions "same-sex marriage by another name," Gov. Linda Lingle vetoed legislation allowing same-sex civil unions, saying the decision should be up to the voters rather than a few in government.

I live in California. Judge Walker just finished up his trial on Prop 8. The Proponents of Prop 8 are now trying to invalidate the 18,000 marriages conducted while it was legal. We're one of those 18,000. I am so sorry about the Civil Union flame out. This is clear prejudice. I wonder if this will stand. It's very distressing and painful to see this happen so often. It also makes me very, very angry.

You can't leave the minorities' civil rights up to popular vote. Hell, yeah, I want an activist court. Like the Roberts court hasn't been the most activist court in memory?

I'd bet dollars to donuts that [Hawai'i governor] Lingle has a future Senate bid in mind; how else to explain such executive antics?
