I am curious how those of you that have been diagnosed but doing RAW ...how have you been doing? Has it made a difference in blood sugars? Has it made you feel better? More energy? What kinds of tweaks have you made to counter any problems? Tell us..inquiring minds need to know this.

I would love to know the answer to this question. Are there better numbers with RAW? Please let us know the benefits
I don't think raw is widespread enough for there to be real, hard data yet, and I myself am very loose about it (living 95% vegan, very high fiber, trying to convert more of that to raw). But I will tell you that as I have been experimenting with raw eating, I have had incredible numbers after an all-raw meal, many of which required NO insulin with a good fasting sugar beforehand (and I'm Type 1). I've heard similar stories from others, and I've tried a lot of other eating schemes. Low carb (i.e. high meat) just made me feel like a brick and gain 40 lbs. I've lost all that again since going vegan.
My blood sugar is holding it's own....in a good range...94-99 in the morning before a meal
Cholesterol was 214...is now 141
blood pressure was very high now is 110 over 60
Been on the Raw diet 1 month
with-in 24 hours I felt great....I started out 100% but made some mistakes so i really think I am more 80%
mostly because I'm still learning what I can do and what I can't..
I am also ADHD my mind is much clearer even without my medicine. This diet is really working for me.....I make one giant salad with ton's of greens and other fibers ( kale, spinach, lettuce, celery, red cabbage,Chinese cabbage, bok choy, green onions, cilantro and daikon radish. I throw fresh blueberries and raspberries on the salad with a few sprouted seeds and beans.. I make this ahead enough for a few days...I eat a large bowel every evening along with other raw side dishes.....One of my side dishes was a corn and zucchini dish with cashew dressing....along with a side dish of sweet potatoes with apples, raisins, pecans and touch of coconut butter.....I make a good variety of side dishes every evening.... breakfast i have raw oatmeal with almond milk...lunch a fruit smoothie...My husband just loves this new way of eating..i bought a new food dryer and a spiralizer mainly because I plan on living this way forever.
I was just recently diagnosed with Type2. I had a pretty decent diet before because I was trying to stay away from food additives like MSG and other unsafe stuff. I immediately started searching for information and ran across a bunch of references to RAW. I watched a movie called Simply Raw and decided to leave my other diet behind as much as I possibly can. I would say that I'm only about 70% RAW right now because I still am trying to figure out what to eat. Been salad, salad, salad, nuts and a little chicken and cheese so far. Anyway, I took the Metformin I was prescribed twice. Both times, my BG dropped within minutes to 50mg/dl which scared the crap out of me, especially since I did not know what to do for sure!! Thank goodness my wife is a paramedic and I got ahold of her right away because I was getting confused and dropping quickly. So, decided it's going to have to be deal with the highs if I must, but I'm not going to try to juggle extreme lows also. So far I have been successful at regulating my glucose to within 10mg/dl of my target without any emergency lows or excessive Highs. I did break down one night a eat 2 cups of raisen bran which made me feel pretty bad the rest of the night. As a newbie to this, I am PLEASED to find out that I don't have to take it to the extreme on the RAW foods...some meat seems to be ok and even some bottled salad dressing. Portion control is extremely important in this regard!!! The trade off from my old SAD diet is I'm still satisfied with what I eat, and when I see the small portion, I just remember I'm not going to feel like death later and need to sleep for 3 hrs after eating it. I feel in control rather than terrified like I was...I can only thank the RAW incentive for this level of comfort with my lifestyle changes. btw, I live in Kansas, and was very much a Meat, Bread and Starch eater all my life. My diet change literally came over night. The one thing that helped me a great deal is that I had already quit drinking beer 3 months ago. Believe me, it was a significant quantity and I really think my diabetes was self inflicted. Look forward to learning as much as I can from everyone about RAW and Diabetes here!!!!
Hi Jiimie B,

I am grateful for your story. I have just been told I am diabetic but need no Insulin so I guess I am a Type 2 but my doctor didn't say for sure. He wants to me to start on Metaformin but now that I read your post about the blood sugar dropping - I definatley don't want too! I don't have any systems of damage because I think my diabetes just developed recently. So, are you not taking the Metaformin and just controling with diet and exercise? That is what I would like to do I am not overweight -but I have been a veg/vegan for a long time but I ate too much white flour products plus not exercising enough lately and too much stress from worries. I have been raw before so I am now returning to it. A few days I ago I started a green drink/smoothie fast and they tested my blood sugar again today when I was getting my lab results and it was only 125 -so I think my green drinks are working (still need to get my own meter)! My fasting blood sugar just six days before was 205 but my A1C is 9.2 which is high. I am just learning about all this but I think that 125 is pretty good for after I ate (or drank I should say) something!

I am trying to decide whether to not go on the meds or not but of course I am worried about my health if I don't go on them. I am sure what your FBS or A1C was when you were first diagnosed but I am interested to find out. Did you just quit the Metaformin or did you tell your doctor? I am having a second option with an endorcinologist - because I feel like maybe I might have a hormone issue too because of the stress. I have done raw before so I can adjust to it no problem and I can definatley get "back into shape". The doctor make it all sound so urgent to get you on meds - like you will die if you don't take them right away. Why is that?

YOu should check out "There is a Cure for Diabetes" by Dr. Gabriel Cousens who is a a raw food doctor who has reversed many diabetes. It is a really interesting book full of science and facts. Really helpful! I am really liking it!
Today is my 3rd day on raw diet, doing ok little bit nervous about it. But also excited about it.Wandapullen54@yahoo.com
Today is my 6th day on a raw diet, and my blood sugar this morning was 99, lower than it's been in years, AND this is without taking Glyburide the night before! My reading was 84 after dinner last night (salad) so I decided not to take the Glyburide. I wanted to wake up in the AM.
Am still on Metofrmin but am hoping to dump all the meds soon. Am also lifting weights and running.
Does anyone know the scoop re: fats? Like how much is too much? I have been putting Olive oil and flax oil on my veggies.
Need to lose about 30 lbs, it's all around the middle. My goal in life is to get rid of that darn belly fat!
Hi Susan,

I am so glad to see others doing it. It depends on which "raw path" you follow but as far as I can tell - the ones who have done the most research on diabetes and have experience with it are Gabriel Cousens and Victoria Buentko. They actually say to keep the fat very low - at least while you are getting off meds and esp if you are trying to lose weight. I can't remember off the top of my head but I think Olive oil is higher in fat than flax plus flax has the Omega-3 which are very good for diabetes. If it were me I would go with the flax but do it light.

Gabriel Cousens has a whole book on Diabetes, I am reading it now and it is very illuminateing. I have just been told I need Metaformin (but nothing else thank god!) But I really don't want to go on the meds if I could have a chance of reversing this now.

I am so happy for you that you are getting off your meds! Gabriel Cousens book would be very useful to you. That is exactly what he does - gets diabetes off their meds with a raw green drink fast and than raw diet. Good luck to you! I am glad to be here!
I am type 1 and have been high raw (with fat and gourmet recipes) and now I am following 80-10-10. I found that eating high raw my numbers didn't improve much, my skin broke out and I was so bloated all the time! Once starting 80-10-10 my insulin needs have gone waaaay down. I was running an A1c in the 8's for three years and now I am looking at 7's if not 6's coming up. My basals went from needing 12 units of Novolog a day to 9. My correction ratio is now 1 unit drops me 150 points. I love eating fruit (I didn't touch it for 10 years following low carb) and I am sleeping better! What else can I say about how great this is for diabetes??
Yum! I am eating lots of pears today! Bartletts are so juicy and good. I am freezing bananas also to make some frozen blended mush and topped with strawberries and blueberries for my evening snack.

Tonight for dinner I will eat steamed veggies- not raw I know- but we are going out to eat and this is the best I can do.

Thanks for the encouragement! and Way to go to you too! 5.8 is wonderful!
Sounds great Claire! Actually Doug Graham has a theory that fat actually makes diabetes (and other disease like Candida) worse - at least in the beginning when you are trying to get to normal levels. He said to cut out all fat for one week to let your liver "catch up" on processing all the fat in your system. A few other well respected raw food say that too. But everyone is different too if what makes their numbers go up and down (or so I am told I am completely new at this - but not new to raw). here are some links about some theory the raw foodists have on diabetes. It is pretty interesting:
