Those of you that juice,, which juice combinations work well for you and which fruits or vegetables do you like to use?

I don't juice because it way to drastic on the blood sugars. I do make vegetable shakes (blended salads) out of frozen vegetables==>Spinach, cauliflower, turnip greens, broccoli, asparagus, artichokes, etc. Ill also toss some fresh veggies in as well. Once this is blended down you can add flavor such as stevia, cinnamon, unsweetened cocoa powder, or other sugar free liquid flavorings, to make it taste like a regular milk shake. By juicing your losing a lot of the fiber which will affect how fast this raises your blood sugar. Once the veggies are blended down you could toss in a piece of fruit if you've gotta have the fruit. The fiber from the veggies will definitely slow the glycemic impact of the fruit and these shakes keep me full for hours. Ill also toss in 1/2 an avocado + ground flaxseed which gives the shake a thicker/creamier texture, and the avocado fat slows down the sugar as well if you wanted to add the fruit. I'm addicted to these shakes...

I juice everyday and usually do a 3 day juice fast at the beginning of each month just to cleanse (if not then I do a juice fast once a week).

A green fruit juice right when I wake up in the morning I find the best. Fruit juices are the easiest for the body to digest (if you nevermind all the fear about diabetics eating fruit) and have found this works for me very well, I maybe take 2-3 units max to cover it. When fasting I alternate between veggie and fruit juices.

My usual morning juice usually contains:

2 x organic gala apples ( or 1 big Fuji)
4 stems of kale, or collard greens
A big handful of organic spinach
1 inch of ginger root
1/2 to 1 cucumber
1/2 a lime or lemon
2-3 stalks of celery
1 small to medium tomato

That usually makes 3 cups or so and it tastes so good! I usually find the less ingredients and simpler the recipe the better things taste.

If I'm doing a veggie or blood building/detox drink, I usually take out the apples and put in 1 carrot and 1 beet. Parsley is also GREAT for juicing.

One of the best and most nutrient rich fruits out there is watermelon and the great thing is it is 95% water and has less than half the sugar content of apples yet is jam packed with nutrients. When I do a cleanse I usually fit in a day of watermelon juicing. I put as much as I want in plus 1/2 lime and it tastes EXACTLY like red gatorade... Well, better actually. You'll notice there is practically no pulp as it is mostly water.

At first I was scared to put in apples (based on my preprogramming) but got over it and found them to be great and that it actually LOWERED my blood sugar. So now I put them in pretty much every juice I make.

Yeah fruit is sweet but the problem is when diabetics check sugars your only cheking for glucose and the fructose in fruits isn't actually recorded by your meter. Another thing is that fructose actually does more damage to the diabetic body than does glucose. Fructose has a greater tendency to form advanced glycation end products (fructosylation), the harmful byproducts of high blood sugar, than does glucose. Also fructose has a greater tendency to be stored as fat by the liver and lead to insulin resistance and other things. I wish I could put fruit back into the regime but I can get all the nutrients of fruit without the negatives by using vegetables. The only real benfits of fruits are the skins where the majority of antioxidants are housed, but the inside is what tastes the best. Juiicing/blending no matter how one does it has mass benefits...

I just broke out my juicer again and I'm going to try this :) I've been leaning towards more raw food eating ..... baby steps but I can see it is helping me lower my insulin intake

I have a certain formula I use now. It's as follows:

1 Quart

1 small bunch or half a large bunch of celery
1 cucumber
1/4 - 1/2 pound of dark leafy greens (kale, collards, swiss chard, or spinach)

Optional for flavor: 1 apple, juice of a lemon, a piece of ginger

I throw that all into a blender with the juicier stuff on the bottom by the blades. I add a cup of water. I puree that till it's pretty smooth. Then I strain it through a paint strainer bag and pour the juice into a quart jar. If everything is organic, I'll fill about 1/4 of the jar with the pulpy mix and the rest juice.

I used to do it a little different, but this has been easiest for me. I make sure and change up the type of greens...and make sure not to eat too much spinach - don't want no kidney stones. I have more info on my blog at http://www.bjaysblog.blogspot.com

I have one caution for diabetics wanting to do the juice/raw food scene. We can all monitor our blood sugars and adjust our insulin (if on insulin) to cover our juicing. But one thing that is not immeidiately apparent is the impact these very concentrated nutrients my have on our blood chemistry. Potassium is the prime offender, oxalic acid is present in great quantites in all dark leafy vegetables (as hinted at by the person who wanted to avoid kidney stones)
Unless your doctor religously does a 24-hr urine to monitor your kidney function, you have no way of knowing how your body is 'clearing' what you put into it. Trace minerals and major minerals are so concentrated in juicing, which my sound like a great idea on the surface, but also very quickly build up in the body. Then of course, I'm also assuming that everyone is doing organic, ORGANIC, ORGANIC when juicing-because, well-the pesticides and fertilizers are concentrated too.
I grew up working in the natural foods industry (since 1976), which I got into because my hippie aunt would take me there so I could have frozen yogurt because it had no sugar, just honey, which was 'ok' for diabetics-or so 'they' thought back then. So I've seen all these things come and go and come around again. One thing I'm stone cold afraid of is "juicing as a lifestyle" Now, as a diabetes educator, former award winning pastry chef (had to be perfect in one bite!) and someone who is married to chef who is very active in the local/slow food movement; I have to say that I ascribe more to Michael Pollan's theories than any other, "Real food, mostly plant based, not too much."

I just had a new combo that was FANTASTIC!

2 Carrots
1/2 big bulb of Fennel
1 Green Apple
Lime (1/3 of a lime, peeled)
Handful of Greens
