I am new to TuDiabetes, and excited to see a raw foods group. Im not completely raw, but saw the movie "Raw for 30 Days", at the Cousens ranch, and got inspired to try. I have found it is hard to do. I own/invested in a Vita-mix! I have a basic dehydrator, which I have not tried yet. I find the prep is discouraging, and it seems you have to plan ahead. I could really use some support and encouragement!

Ok, just had a pumpkin spice coffee at dunkin donuts which i assumed was just a flavoring, unsweetened. Found out when I started feeling wired that it had 35 grams of sugar and 35 grams of carb AUGH! Now I am flying from the sugar and carbs, afraid to take sugars now (on oral meds) Other than exercising and drinking water does anyone have any suggestions? This rarely happens, sigh.

Certain foods such as broccoli, cauliflower, greens... should be prepared differently when eaten raw. They must be cut in smaller pieces and sometimes blanched to ease digestion and avoidance of stomach cramping.

New the group. I have a almost 4 year old son who was diagnosed with type 1 in May. Feeding his a vegan diet, and doing as much raw as possible. Definately see a difference in his blood sugars when he eats raw.

I use bee pollen for smoothies (1 tsp. bee pollen, 5 frozen strawberries, 1 frozen kiwi, 10 frozen grapes, 5 pecans placed in a food processor) and cereal.

I am completely amazed at how well my body is healing on a raw foods diet! I was so inspired, I started a blog:

www.rawdiabetic.wordpress.com

The forum here is wonderful....I can't wait to meet more fellow diabetic raw foodists! :)

Thank you for all the information. I am making treasure of it.
What I can say for sure is that I was on a high protein diet for a couple of years and at the end it did hurt my kidneys. So just now I am low on animal protein. The 80g I am allotted daily I found out that if I eat it raw it gives me a greater satisfaction as regards fullness and taste.
Tomorrow I will be doing all the kidney and blood tests related once again. Hopefully this modification has helped.
For dinner tonight there is raw organic liver...
Thanks again.

No, because I don't know of anything reputable that's low glycemic, low carb AND low fat. In raw foods, the main two sources of calories are sugar carbs and fats. If a person isn't eating one or the other of them (not advisable to eat a diet high in both, especially as a diabetic) there is little chance that they're getting enough calories. (Not getting enough calories is probably the number one reason people have for not being able to do a raw food diet -- although most don't realize it was a calorie issue and will say things like "it made me tired" or "I was hungry all the time.")
