Are there any recommendations or experiences with good diabetes specialists or endocrinologists in the Bay Area? A good diabetes center? I am asking for my boyfriend who is a type 1 diabetic for 27 years and may be starting to develop some complications.

We are going to be moving to Berkeley and need to decide on which health insurance to take and finding a good diabetes doctor is important. Do you have any recommendations? We can choose from Kaiser, HealthNet, and Blue Cross.

Thanks a lot for any input,

WWG

I adore Dr. Anna Shurter in Oakland (510) 465-6700. She's young, smart, compassionate, GREAT. Love her.

Dr. Shurter has left her practice in Oakland. Have you found another doctor you like? I was assigned to Dr. Waring, but am interested in other choices. Thanks!

I don't know if he'll be working in SF or willing to cross the bridge? If so, UCSF has an excellent diabetes center - best i've ever been to! i know they take blue shield, but i'm not sure about health net.

I've had bad experiences with Kaiser, primaily because you're limited to Kaiser dr's and facilities which are great if you're healthy, but horrible if you have any kind of chronic illness.. but i know others who have had positive experiences there...

Kaiser is GREAT! If you are ok with going a distance to walnut creek I recommend Dr. Pamela Kershner. She is AWESOME and her D-team is AWESOME! I live in San Francisco and I drive to see her.

If not, The closer Kaiser in Oakland on MacCarthur is great as well, I've had a couple different Dr.s there and they are awesome.
