TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

My five year old daughter takes Ballet and Hip Hop classes twice a week. I used to sit in my car while she was in the 50 minute class. Now I force myself to walk for 30 minutes or do an exercise class at the gym that is right next door to the dance studio. I have lost weight and on the days I do this my BG is as close to perfect as it can get. It feels like a gift, those 30+ minutes and they make such a difference with my health.

Walking has changed my life. With some significant encouragement from doctor I began a routine a month before I started my pump (turned it on Feb 17.) A mile to my bus stop and back each day – a mile each way – rather than driving. And at least a mile at lunch along the Seattle waterfront. No weight loss yet but better control of blood pressure and BG. I wish I had started years ago, but better late then…

Walking is the only thing that keeps my BG under control without drugs. Of course, watching starchy carbs is critical as well. I walk about 3- 3 1/2 miles per day at a pace between 3-4mph. Listen to many audiobooks and podcasts on my iPod and the time flies. Usually come off of these walks with my BG around 85 and sometimes close to 70. Good way to burn off a dinner, especially if you've been bad. :)

Incidentally, check out the audiobook plans at www.audible.com. You can get audiobooks as cheap as $10/book. I've been a member for years and love it. If you like the thought or decide to sign up, would appreciate you using my name - markholmes - as your referral. I'll get a free audiobook - can never have enough! :)

can I add to this, that I am competing with myself, using a pedometer, counting my every steps.
I have promised myself to walk 5 million steps in 2009. So far I am up to par, with a little more than 100.000 steps a week.
It definately motivates me to get up and out, or even to jump, dance and walk in front of tele every evening.
You know what they say - every thousand miles begins with a simple step!

I love this simple step idea, and all the replies are so very true! This one is really LOTS and LOTS of steps, and it's a good one - simple and free and feels real good!!

Walking has made a big change in me. My hubby bought me a treadmill 3 years ago after major surgery to help me recover. It did wonders.
I now walk on it 5-6 days a week. I haven't lost much weight but it has made up in muscle strength and losing inches. I have some real peppy music in my iPod and each song is a different speed/incline increment. I look forward to getting on every day. My reward is a luscurious bath or shower.

I have worn a pedometer for almost 10 years. I love hitting a new goal in the number of steps. Or course, it's "another number" to become preoccupied with, so take it lightly.

I'm just wondering if you (or anybody out there) have a specific brand of pedometer you can recommend and/or a place to buy it for a decent price.

Andrea, there are so many options, it really depends on what you want your pedometer to keep track of. I found some really good 'cheap' ones at the local pharmacy that work just fine, they simply count your steps and miles. Others can keep track of calories burned and so on. What do you want to keep track of?

I tried a cheap one and it didn't seem accurate.
I would like one that has more options (calories, etc.) but isn't ridiculously expensive.
Ease of use is always a factor for me, too.

I actually have to walk a lot. I can't drive, so Buses and such are my speed and it's a 15 minute walk out of the neighbourhood to get to the bus, so many times I'll just walk it. Saves bus fares.

Over the years though, I notice the front of my legs hurt like heck after a while, about 10 minutes from the start and I have to rest for a few minutes. Then start out again. My fella says it sounds like shin splints whatever they are. Only way I can do aerobic like that is stationary bike (Legally blind out on the road normally, dangerous, IMO) or elliptical but I can't afford one of those yet.

I even went to a wish-type website to try for help or ideas on how to get a good elliptical, but no responses yet :-( Not a peep and I'd be happy with comments at least...

My work is a 20-25 minute walk, so I do that 3 times a week. Rain or shine.
