Hi Everyone!
I just wanted to say hi. Yep, you're right, I am new to all of this but I am wondering what everyone is thinking or doing? I am on the road right now for my job, and finding traveling to be a bit more challenging than I ever imagined. But hey, it's working out.
So, being new to this, I guess I can ask the obvious...what do we do next? ;-)

hi

31 years old been a diabetic since 12/21/06. I'm on Humalog 75/25 mix 2 times a day. I've been single since 12/16/07. Currently living at my parents until I get my health back in order and a job. I am thinking about finishing my masters in Education. I like to knit, bake, sew, sing, read. I like to take pictures when its warmer out. And dating is hard as when I was diagnosed, I was with someone who was supportive. Now its something I dread. I actually put in my eharmony profile that I am a diabetic to get it out there from the get go.
Amy: I'm curious about whether you think there has been any effect on level of interest in putting diabetes in your eHarmony profile. I've thought about doing it, but I've done searches in match and jdate for the words "diabetes" and "diabetic" and have not found anyone who has put it in, so I am a bit hesitant. What has your experience been?
Yeah, I know how you feel...I'm currently living in Knoxville and had to retire from a supervisory position at a scenic production company out of Orlando because I had to stand all day and I started getting wounds on my feet that wouldn't heal, while at the same time I lost alot of my vision, so I had to go on disability for blindness...and man, talk about putting a serious crimp in your social life! I don't think I've dated anyone since this happened back in 2003...

Hey everyone. Just joined this group. Yup, I'm single and have been for about 5 years now. It would be nice to have someone in my life that understands this silly illness i have:) I'm 46yrs. old living in High Prairie, Alberta, Canada. I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2002, but I'm sure I had it before then. I have other issues such as Fibromyalgia, high BP, arthritis and of course along with that comes Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I'm not able to hold down "normal" jobs, so now am looking to do some babysitting...as long as my nerves can hold up lol. Looking forward to meeting new people on here! Have a great day
Hi, Carla. Welcome to Tu Diabetes, and to this group in particular. You've come to a great place with great people and excellent info. Hopefully "the collective" here will help fill in all the gaps that most doctors -- as knowledgeable as most are -- seem to leave.

Cheers!

Ian
Thanks Ian. You have a great night!
Hey Everyone
I'm Chris 21 years old Single, blessed with type 1. Diagnosed 10/31/1994 at 5 years old. Now explain to a 5 year old that he cant go trick or treating. I've been on the Pump for 4 years with major improvement. Im currently in MI but Sunday (5/4/09) I leave for Mcallen TX. At that point im sworn in as a Federal Agent for Border Patrol. Then i'm shipped to NM for boot camp. Wish me luck, they will work us hard, but im going out there for us diabetics to prove that there isn't anything we cant do. By the way nice ride Karin im sporting a Scion tC pictures on my page.
That is great to hear you are headed to the border patrol. I had heard of them hiring but dismissed myself as a candidate due to being type 1 myself cause I was told you can not serve in the military with diabetes so I assumed that the border patrol was the same. I am very interested keeping up with your progress and if they are still looking for candidates my bloodsugars are great. Good luck Man on the boot camp sounds like fun!

Paul
Hey Chris,

How are you able to join the Border Patrol? I was diagnosed with type 1 two weeks before trying to join the Marine Corps. Since then I have come to learn that as a type 1 we are not allowed in any military branch.

I don't know why everyone is so "I can't imagine someone wanting to date me since I am diabetic" You just need to "man up", or "woman up" if you are female. I have been type 1 for almost 20 years 3 years on the pump and never had 1 issue. Well I had one issue with this stupid chick in college. Anyways, most women I dated thought that it was cool. You just have to sell yourself as being even more cool since you are diabetic and not considering it a handicap. If anyone has detailed questions about this type of thing I would be happy to talk about it.

Nick
I felt the same way until recently. I have had type I since I was 11, and I never had trouble telling people I was diabetic (even potential dates). I dated the same guy for several years, though, and he had a problem with the idea that I would probably die before him. Other than that, he handled it fine.

However, since I have been single, I had one guy completely blow me off because he saw my infusion site. That's just one guy, though, I wouldn't say it is a trend. I think it is just easy for all of us to be nervous about it because of the few times things like that happen.

Best advice is to just shrug off when someone cares about something like having a condition. In the long run, people are going to have all sorts of problems.
I know exactly what you mean...I wear mine like a badge of honor. It's not an easy thing to go through 30 years with diabetes...I'm not emberassed by it at all. If someone wouldn't date me because of this, I wouldn't want their weak asses anyway.
Eric
