Symlin received FDA approval in March 2005, although it was not introduced until November 2005. The package is depicted here. See the post entitled "Introduction" for a comprehensive list of studies and other info. about Symlin. Also, please see the "Symlin Patient Information", "Some Details on Symlin's Rocky FDA History", "Symlin and Hypoglycemia: A Genuine Concern or Not?" and "Symlin May Be Mixable with Insulin After All" for some additional background that you might not come across elsewhere.

Gastroparesis in diabetics is usually caused by neuropathic damage to the vagus nerve in the stomach.

I started on Symlin the end of 2007. I was so thrilled at the way it worked since weight loss for me was almost impossible. I lost 30 pounds in about 7 months but it did not come without complications. I was hospitalized in March 2008 and diagnosed with Gastroparesis. I had never heard of this but the doctors say that the Symlin may have brought it on. It is a disorder with the nerve in the stomach that lets the food go into the intestine. Mine had to be stretched and will have to be periodically since they cannot stent it on a permanent basis. The opening must be able to close also.

Hi Yvonne,

Symlin is not an insulin. It is a synthetic version of amylin which is found in the human body wherever insulin is found. Check out www.symlin.com. It will be able to explain it better than I ever could.

Well today is my 2nd day.....still on the 15 mcg and haven't experienced any nausea. hopefully i'm lucky or will i get it when i go up on my dosage? My sugars were messed up yesterday and still was taking my apidra. I go into see my dr again on the 21st and will most likely go up on my dosage.

Currently, I am taking Lantus? What are the benefits of Symlin over the other available insulins? Why was is it prescribed over the others? Thanks, Yvonne C.

So I haven't calculated yet when I need to go to 45-(daughter had almost 24 hours of hard labor bringing that Abby into this world--mother and daughter--dad too--doing good) but so far so good--missed a couple of doses and bg's started rollercoastering (yeah I made that word up) almost immediately and settled down almost immediately after the next dose..so it helps me for whatever reason..

After I see if I can get up to the 60 I'll see if i need more than half insulin at bk and dinner--lunch I may have to go down to less than half my pre-symlin amount..

so ven if I can't get any further than the 30 (no reason to doubt it--I've just learned not to take things for granted) it will be helpful
