Now that peanut butter, nuts, and seeds have been banned at school I have a really hard time finding an appropriate snack. I used to sip a smoothie with PB all morning and it kept my numbers tight. Nuts were the perfect snack.I already do cheese. I'm just wondering if anyone else has found a solution to this?

Have you tried Sunbutter (Sunflower Seed Butter) instead of the peanut butter? My son has a peanut allergy, and we love the sunbutter. The peanut free schools in our area use it in the lunch program. Trader Joe's carries it the cheapest I have found (Imagine that!) But we also get it at Wal-mart, and the Hyvee health market. I also like beef sticks, or beef jerky, celery with salsa (no protein). Good luck!
Thanks KcF. The beef jerky sounds good. Our entire School Board has banned seeds as well as nuts. The Sunbutter sounds great though. Think I'll walk to Walmart tomorrow and check it out. Sounds like a great change for home. Hope you are enjoying the summer.

Do you have a fridge? I do celery with humus or cream cheese. I do the little snack packs of cottage cheese with a cup of fruit. I do a lot of yogurt -- mix in a little cereal to give it crunch/that's what's fun with nuts - the crunch. I keep string cheese and babybel on hand, too. Trail mix without the nuts is different but an idea - sub in sesame sticks or what you like. They outlawed seeds? Ouch. I always have a mix of pepitas, sunflower seeds, soy and fruit chips (I don't like raisins) and scoop a dixie cup at a time. Soy beans by themselves are close, too. Crunchy and a good protein. They are a bean so they shouldn't be banned. We have a local organic market - The Mustard Seed - and they have a whole section of bins of dry goods that you can scoop by the pound. If you have a place like that maybe they would have some ideas. I can't do beef jerky - too salty for me - but my boys all love it so there's an idea.

Hope some of this brainstorming helped. Good Luck!
Thanks so much for your response Marcia. I completely forgot about the cream cheese. I like humus and cottage cheese too. I'm thinking that I could use a low carb wrap filled with lettuce and cream cheese and cut it up into bite size pieces for those days when I have tons of duty or meetings over the lunch hour. I really appreciate the bainstorming. Thanks.
Ever try Larabars? They come in a wide variety of tasty flavors. I've found them at health food stores, but also Shopko, Walmart, Sams, and other places. Periodically they go on sale. They are natural, filling, and flavorful. Here's a link to the Home site so you get an idea of flavors. Carbs are decent, at least for me. Larabar site
Thanks Hully. The Larabars look so good. They might be just the thing for a snack at the gym. Alas... they have nuts and we can't have anything with nuts or seeds in the schools... not even a "might contain" product. Does anyone else have this problem?
Wow, those are pretty tight restrictions. This is in effect even if there aren't any students/adults allergic to nuts? Larabars are good...
You said you already do cheese - including string cheese?

We haven't totally banned PB. I keep some put away and use it with apples or bananas. When I have a student with an allergy, I make sure they aren't in the room and clean well after.
There are some good fiber and protein bars that have a good balance and not too much sugar in them (less than 7 grams). I keep those around as well.
Could you do those peanut butter filled pretzels? That way the PB is contained and no contact happens.

Thanks equineacres. We have "Sabrina's Law". It doesn't matter if any students in the school have allergies. PB and "might contains" are totally banned across the board. :(
