In my lifetime, I've gone through 40 and 80 unit beef and pork insulin, now 100 unit synthetic, reusable syringes and needles, now disposable, 3 different meters, now, and thankfully for members around me, a continuous glucose monitor to give me an idea if the b.s. is getting low or too high. Now on the internet because the meter company doesn't have a computer program for people like me who didn't have either email or internet access. Unfortunately your life may be a copy of mine with the struggles.

David, the Joslin medal is awarded to all type 1 diabetics who have lived with diabetes for 50 and 75 years. I have the 50 year medal and will be eligible for the 75 year medal in 10 more years.

Here is a link to what you need to know in order to apply for the 50 year medal. the medals are awarded to people all over the world!

Since I'm north of the 49th, I don't know whether it would include me.I think that there is something in Canada that might be something like a recognition item to acknowledge the accomplishment. I'm just not sure about what one would have to go through to get it.

David G. -Might be the newest meber of the group but I jumped the line quickly. Been a diabetic for 52 years and 1 month. Would I have some stories for many of you. Testing urine for sugar(long before blood glucose meters), 40 unit beef and pork insulin.

Oops, I just joined and then calculated...I guess my recently saying it's almost 30 years had me convinced. It was Dec 1981, So, I am joining this group a year early, but I see that is allowed. I'll be quiet, and do what they call "lurking" to see what others are saying.

Richard, the Joslin Medalist Study sounds fascinating. Hopefully it will hold some answers to help newly diagnosed type 1's avoid complications like we have been able to do. Thanks for the info!

Greetings! So glad I found this group. Thanks to Robert for starting it. This is my 40th yr with diabetes. Went into a coma at age 12 with a bg of 1500. Parents took me to three docs, not one diagnosed me correctly. I am quite healthy still, do have neuropathy in hands & some background retinopathy in rt. eye. I'm still standing!
