T1 since Christmas 1978. I remember loosing weight, thirst, vomiting and then being driven down I-44 at 90 mi/hr by my frantic parents as I became less conscious. I spent over a week in the hospital as they trained me on shots (remember the orange routine!) and scared me to death w/ talk of complications. I got the best doc ever who started me on MDI when others were not doing them. I started w/ the urine testing and visual reading of those white plastic test strips. Little of a blur when I got my first meter...it was a gigantic beige Glucometer and it was a year or so after diagnosis...I remember we paid for it and it was something like $500. It was wonderful and helped me greatly. In the first year of dx I was taking 3 small shots of regular insulin (pork or something) and then my cells fully gave out and I had to add a night shot (NPH or something like it). I was 15 at diagnosis...8th grade. I remember having to take snacks everywhere and waking almost every night w/ low BGs. Things are so much different now! We have come a long way baby:) So glad to know you all and have learned so much from our interactions.

Hi everyone like me! I was dx at age 6 in May of 1973 while I was in first grade. Yes, I do remember the Tes-Tape and Clinitest tubes for urine testing. I was supposed to do it 3 times each day, but was lucky to do it once a week. I too used to be on one shot of NPH which was horrible because of the peaks and needing to eat when I didn't want to. I remember being in the hospital for 12 days and my mom coming in every morning to learn how to give me a shot with the nurse watching how she drew up the insulin and how she got me to cooperate and hold still. I don't remember much except that I had to eat an apple at recess everyday and have a glass of OJ and a bread exchange and meat exchange everyday at 4 PM. The other thing I remember was eating a 1/2 cup of ice cream every night before bed because if I didn't, my sugar would crash and I wouldn't get up in the AM. Never had the opportunity to go to diabetes camp, but I think it would be great if we could have even a long weekend camp for adults that wanted to go! Sounds like fun to me!! Anyone else remember when Days of Our Lives had a storyline about Neil and ?'s young child getting dx and the trouble it caused in their lives.

Anngelia:

I am in school in FL. I am sort of doing my EdD in education. Anyway, I have ot go to Disney world for a week this summer for school. I was amazed at the rates, the charge for the contemporary resort at Disney world is 160 / night. The Polynesian is $130 / night. They even pick you at the airport for no charge. Flying in for a weekend at htose rates sounds really very nice.

Rick, I recently found the dlife website and someone has posted that they would like to have a retreat for adult T1. I posted that I was all for that idea but so far it hasnt really taken off. I wish that it would. I would love to have a weekend or whatever to hang out with some people who also share this lovely illness. We could have fun!
