Welcome Shelby! I never got to use the tape back in the 70's it was the urine test for me. OMG u got out in a week? it was 3 weeks for me in the hospital

In the early 70's, I used "testapes" which was a roll of yellow tape that you tore off and then tested your urine with. The tape was supposed to stay yellow - the greener it got the more sugar in your urine. I recorded the readings in a little book which I then would take to the doctor every 6 weeks. There was no such thing as a glucometer back then for me. I started taking one shot in the morning and then after a few years it turned into 2 shots. When I first was diagnosed, I was in the hospital for over a week!!!!

I still count the calories 1st! HA! Then if I'm luckyI get the carbs right! HA!

In the 60's we didn't really know much about carbs. There wasn't much in the way of education. You learned as you went along. Originally you couldn't get a meter unless you were up to 4 shots a day.
I still have not been able to get myself to count carbs periodically I resolve to do it but it never lasts after all of these years I'm pretty good at guesstimating which is what we used to have to do.

I became diabetic in 73 and we used the clinitest tabs then 2 shots a day and OMG YES weighing out food!!! How I hated that!!!!! I remember those moniters that took 1 minute too. Weioghed as much as a brick & about as big too! I'm with u about not being able to believe the carb counting. I still catch myself counting calories instead of carbs. Well when I got D it was count ur calories. LOL!

When I started we had to use
Benedicts Solution Then Clinitest tablets til glucose testing with strips that took several minutes then use a color chart which gave an approx bs, then early glucose monitors which took at least 1 min.
Insulin was u40 and u80 in reg nph lente ultralente and a couple of others that I can't remember. Some were taking at least 3-4 injections per day. Others 1 injection a day that were a mix of nph and reg. Some 2 injections as in the previous sentence. As I remember you could not use reg with any of the lentes. We had to weigh everything that you ate. then it was measure. No we do carb counting
I can't believe that

Danny has a group here that shows all the things weused to use back when but I can't remember the name of it right now. I think it would be a great idea to have one set up somewhere so's ppl could see it all and look at what we used to have to do. I don't have anything around now b/c I got in the attitude years ago to throwit all away and did. Oh well Now my daughtercould see what it used to be back when....LOL! She became a Type 1 in 99

I haven't been on for awhile.
I forgot it is pleasant to "converse" with people in like situations.
I was diagnosed in 1966 when things were really backwoods. Taking an aspirin could change what your strip read. I still have all the old "equipment", test tubes etc. I think there ought to be a museum no newly diagnosed diabetic would believe it.
The equipment is easier today but it is still a constant thought.
