Yes, Tish.  lol  I was admonished that I should be eating at least 150 g of CHO a day, but I don't.  I eat anywahere near 60-85 a day, and I won't eat more than that, or I'll spike.

Well, I've cut my carbs down to about 70-75g per day, and I've lost 18 lb. so far. Only 10lb. to go for a normal BMI. And I've really reduced spikes, too. Now I've got to get more exercise, so I can be sure that what I've lost is fat, and not muscle!!

I'm going to stop listening to my nutritionist.  She is just following the ADA advice of eating 60 grams of carbs for each meal which spikes my BS.  I've cut down my carbs to 30 grams each meal and added more protein.  Has anyone done this?

Welcome, Tish! :-) What's on your mind?

The shame of it is I live in another state so I can't influence much... I hope they stumble upon the information before it is too late.. I don't believe in extremes and I am trying to raise my own daughter with the wisdom that too much of a good thing is bad for you in any type of item.  Hopefully it sinks in.. LOL

Of course you are welcome!! :-)

I'm sorry to hear that your family does not deal well with diabetes.

I grew up with everyone telling me, "Natalie, don't eat that, you'll get diabetes!" and that's not real productive, either, because it caused a great deal of guilt when I was diagnosed.

It's real hard to influence other adults as to how they raise their children. All you can be is a good role model. And be supportive of the kids when they are around you.

Good luck!

Hello,  new to the group and hope I am welcome.  Can I add my two cents. I am over weight my brother is over weight and most of my family is. I am just learning as my family comes out of the diabetes closet to me that half of my family has diabetes and has been hiding it out of some kind of twisted shame thing.  I am furious.  If I had known they had had problems I could have shaped my health care better and prepared more for it. but no one warned me but wasting my time being angry won't get me anywhere.  So the shouting is over.. I am just frustrated that they are not telling the children to be careful watch their sugar and take better care of theirselves instead of stuffing soda into their wee hands when they are sipping a baby bottle.

I also think it's because of the baby boom... All those kids... who are now older, and well, they got married and had kids too... In short, people are reproducing! *gasp* lol There's bound to be more Diabetes... hehe I don't think they ever seem to think of that... But I think that the stats are not going to be quite like what they say... Because they hold a bias of fat causing diabetes... And well, it doesn't quite work like that... We'll just have to see when we get there.

Your stories disprove the myth that in societies where there was not an overabundance of food, there was no Type 2 diabetes, and no obesity. I hate that myth, because archaeology has disproven it by discovering obese statuettes that are clearly anatomically correct, and not just exaggerations. Historically, fat was much admired, because it indicated wealth -- only the wealthy could afford to eat enough to get fat. And they did! And I'm positive that some of them got diabetes -- it just wasn't diagnosed (medicine wasn't very advanced or available), and when they died, it was unknown what they died from. If diabetes is increasing now because there is more obesity, then it's because we are a wealthy nation, and people are genetically programmed to eat! (And we must remember that MOST obese people DON'T get diabetes!)
