Comment by Natalie ._c- on June 13, 2012 at 9:45am Glad you're addressing that on your blog, Christalyn. The issue of T2 is SO judgmentally and badly addressed in the media, with their stereotypes, and I think that is SO counterproductive for people who actually are trying to live healthy lives with T2. Blame and guilt never helped anyone, and the so-called War on Obesity would have been MUCH better named Working Toward Healthy Living, with an emphasis on how our work environment, life stresses and physical environment need to be dealt with and cleaned up, how industry should not be dictating what we eat (thinking about fast food, although many obese people do NOT eat fast food!) and in general a helpful attitude toward people with obesity (and T2) rather than the judgmental and hostile attitude which is so often portrayed. We really need positive voices and we need the HEARD!
These are all good answers! I will be putting some of these up on my blog about the subject matter. If you want a link please email me. I am not allowed to mention the name of my blog here. (long story)
I would add frustration over weight issues... it feels like even though I eat better than most thin people I do not lose weight, or my weight loss is temporary. I also think there is a certain amount of guilt and self blame that comes along with type 2; like, if I had just worked harder all my life to diet and exercise more maybe I would not have so many health issues. I understand that there is a very strong genetic piece at work here, but I think that it is still hard to get away from the blame since the majority of society sees it as my fault.

Comment by Judith on June 12, 2012 at 4:57pm PS---sorry---I should say I control for the moment with diet and exercise only. 69 really isn't a problem for me. Plus my fibromyalgia mimics the shakies and disorientation of hypoglycemia. So anybody worried about the D is going think that's the cause. All I needed was a piece of string cheese---protein stabilizes fibrofogs.

Comment by Judith on June 12, 2012 at 4:51pm Ditto Natalie. Including my recent hospital stay where the only educational approach I could figure out with my nurse was to go ahead and give in to her urgings to eat a little high carb peanut butter (1/4 tsp!) and spike from a perfectly OK-for-me 69 to 200 so she could give me insulin---it's all she knows to do.
But DX at age 57 means turning your life inside out and upside down---including every relationship with every friend and family member, cat and human. Everything changes when one is hoping for a little, probably irrational desire for stability.....In a word or two, it is conducive to regular bouts with depression and despair...
Comment by Natalie ._c- on June 12, 2012 at 4:03pm I think the most depressing thing for T2's is the societal blame they endure. Add that to the fact that if you're on diet and exercise, or oral meds, you really don't have any simple way to lower BGs, because most of those things are not meal dependent. So you might feel very out of control and powerless to do anything about it. There's no simple fix for T2, and that has to be depressing.
I don't get really depressed, but I do get down sometimes.
I think it is because we can't be a "normal" person. Can't eat what everyone else does. Sometimes, can't do what everyone does. Can't get my BS to what it should be. Can't get a really good doctor in our area that REALLY understands us. Just can't get a good handle on IT sometimes. (I know many here have, but I haven't or maybe I just haven't come to grips with IT. Living in denial.) I give up and will eat something that I know that I shouldn't. Then I will get upset with myself. It's a vicious circle.
I appreciate the comments but don't be so clinical. think about the life style changes, people perception of diabetes, how doctors treat diabetics........
Comment by Steven on June 12, 2012 at 8:59am ...following on from the depression dialogue, I think a lot of us simply get "cheesed off" with the whole diabetes experience ...and for the want of a better word, we may say we feel "depressed" at our Diabetes Reviews ...which the health professional may just take at face-value. If the word "depressed" is minuted in our patients' files, it becomes official. Depression hence conflated with diabetes.
