Hey folks!!
I got wind of a group here in LA that wants to send TYPE 2 DIABETICS to a conference in Boston On June 19, 2013. I don't think I will be able to make it because of my work schedule. We have clients coming. Everything is on their dime as far as the flight and food at the conference. I know they wanted to fly me to Boston on the 18th of June. Attending the conference and fly back to LA June 19th. Let me know if you are interested and we can exchange information.
The veggie thing is still going well. I have had a few bites of meat in May but they were very very small. I found it hard to tell the people that were serving me food I was vegetarian. So I ate very tiny portions. Since I am not really doing it for religious reasons or otherwise I find it hard to tell people of my new requirements fearing I might inconvenience them when they are being so hospitable to me.. For the most part I haven't eaten a full steak since Janauary!
Comment by Carly on May 29, 2013 at 10:52pm Well once again I am here for advice. Not necessarily diabetic advice this time.
I met a gentleman online. We became good friends. Long story short. He has had a quadruple bypass 5 years ago and told me he is feeling himself die. Today he was in the hospital with a mild heart attack and stroke. Of course I was stunned. Even more stunning is he refused treatment. And was home by the time he contacted me. When I spoke to him his speech was slowed which is a sign of a stroke. He told me he has all ready accepted his fate of dying with the next 3 years if not sooner. He told me he explained this to his 21 year old son. I am getting the picture he does not have the best relationship with him. His wife past away several years ago from a heart attack too in her sleep.
My question is why does he want to die? Why is it so easy for accept dying and not try to extend his life. I have told him that I find it unacceptable that he wants to die.
He keeps telling me he just wants to be happy and live till his time comes. I am not in love with him but as a human being I do care and it is baffling to me. I am thinking about letting him go as a friend because I don't want to watch him die. Nobody in his family knows that he had this episode today...only me and I am 2 hours away from him. He doesn't even want his son to know anything happened. I don't think he has ever had a lot of friends. I am just not sure what to do.. any advice.
Comment by Natalie ._c- on April 18, 2013 at 6:04pm I'm all for anything that makes you feel better. One possibility is to keep a log -- just what you ate, not amounts, and how you're feeling that particular day. Then you can see whether, over the long run, whether it's making a difference for you. And if you include BGs and A1cs, you can also see how your eating patterns are affecting your diabetes management, too. Good for you for working on it! :-)

Comment by Doc P on March 28, 2013 at 5:46pm Hey Christalyn, I'm just seeing your message. Every year I go meatless for a month. I'm currently in the midst of my 30 days now. Just before being diagnosed with diabetes, I challenged myself to go 60 days. I love Tofukey sausage. I can send you some recipes. Tonight I made meatless meatloaf with brown rice and kidney beans (I had a salad for the greens). I do eat eggs and occasionally I have to eat fish if I feel that I am not getting enough protein. So, it's not vegetarian, it's pescatarian--pescatarians eat fish. (I do not eat other things with eyes though. No crab, lobster, etc. only fish).
Well inquiring minds want to know....I ate some eggs, a waffle, and a tuna salad yesterday. I am rather liking this no meat things. I still have to research actually what is really health for vegetarians. Don't worry I am not doing the vegan thing.
Has anybody ever done the call to congress for diabetics?

Comment by Gerri on March 25, 2013 at 1:28pm Vegetarians have to eat a good deal of carbs to get complete protein, if they don't eat eggs &/or dairy. I was vegetarian for over 30 years & ate different grains, beans, lentils, nuts. High carb. Soy's not healthy, so I avoided soy. Protein is essential & it depends how much you need. Active people, those who work out, need more to repair muscle.
I will have to research more how vegetarians get their protein. I actually did this on a wimb.
Comment by Natalie ._c- on March 25, 2013 at 12:52pm I'm with the meat eaters, although you don't have to gorge on meat products!! You definitely need that protein in order for your body to function! But you can eat nuts, and nut-derived substitutes like almond milk, if you like them, and you can eat lots of vegetables, if you can figure out what to do with them (I'm lousy at that -- I can see an unknown vegetable at the store, and not have a clue what to do with it!). If you want to go low-carb, you have to do it right, in order to preserve your nutritional status -- some people can do it beautifully.
Also, have you had your thyroid checked? Hypothyroidism can be a cause of low energy, and the tests are much more sophisticated than they were when I started developing it -- I went about 20 years with untreated hypothyroidism, and couldn't understand why I was so tired!
Anyway, good luck with your endeavors -- low carb can indeed help with weight loss, as long as you find ways to make it varied and appetizing. :-)
