Hi Gracey; Welcome to our little family of people with diabetics and know that here you will find strength, answers, and friends that will be here for you through this situation. I too cried when all of this was going on; mostly at night after everyone went to bed and I was by myself. We have two young granddaughters that are living with us and at the time all of this was going on they were way to young to understand what it all meant; but know they are there making sure that he tests and takes his medicine. If you ever need anything know that we are all here for you to get you through this and will listen and those that know more than me will help you find those answers that you are seeking. Stay strong and you will get through this.

Hi. I'm new to all of this. My husband was diagnosed with type 1 a lil over a week ago via ketoacidosis /coma it was one of the most horrible things that I ever had happen. I didn't even know what ketoacidosis was when they said it nor was it explained to me. I didn't know.. How could I have not known. He's always been skinny and peed a lot yes more in that last week but I thought it's stress staring a new job being away from home from training so I got him vitamins and weight gaining shakes and than boom... He went down and real fast it scares me to think what if we waiting another day before going to the e. R. So here I am scared petrified icu almost 3 days step down floor almost 3 days now I'm at home just in super wifey mode tryin to fix something that can't be fixed, only managed. Everyone's saying it will get better and easier but how can that be it only becomes a habit to do your routine .i am staying positive in front of him I don't need to much negative energy by him but on the inside I'm crying and screaming. I'm a wreck so is he our kids too. They are teenagers and I'm hoping they don't Google so much cause some things like blindness, limb loss ect they don't need to much misinformation... Is it normal for blurry vision after starting insulin? I read yes but I just don't trust anything I read on line. Why didn't the doctors tell me about the coma. I didn't know he was in coma till I over heard a house doctor ask the nurses why she's sedation a coma patient. He definitely was not sleeping. Thrashing, moaning, ripping his lines out.. Unaware of where he was in fact I'm crying to much to even write about it anymore

I am the wife of a type 2 diabetic, and he was told when we went to the VA for him to have ingreal hernia surgery. He had to have a 1ft. by 2ft.herina taken off of him because he got sick December 2009, and we thought it was the flu; but it was the hernia leaking human waste into his stomach making him sick. The VA hospital was there when nobody else cared because we didn't have health insurance and because he is a veteran the VA took him at the hospital. Thank God for them because they at least got down to business and got him in there and took off the hernia and even though that was what he was in there for; it took 5 surgeries in 4 weeks to get stuff done; and they had to also take his right testicle on top of that because it was comprised. The shocker came when I got to the hospital and say them give him insulin and nobody said why until we got to talking to the doctor and they said that he was having some trouble with his sugar. Well, his primary doctor told us they would take his blood and see if he was a diabetic and it came back that he was and they gave him oral medication, and said to take his blood sugar 2x's a day, and when his numbers dropped below 100 or went above 200; nobody said anything about it until recently. Now; they say to call when his numbers are either too high or too low; but I know from taking care of my Mom before she died that you need to get help right away. He works security at nights, and he is also trying to help take care of me because of my health issues, and he gets tired and falls asleep a lot and the other day; he went to go to work and he like to fell off the porch; and we got him into the house and his numbers were very low; and they said to call them if his numbers did not go up in an hour. His numbers are low one minute and high the next minute. It is really frustrating that we do not know what to do, and now they say that he may have to go on shots; and he doesn't want to go on them. How do I help him? We've been married for 30 years, and we've been through a lot and we need someone to guide us through this process. How do we help him, what do we need to do to get his numbers down, what do we do when his numbers are low?

Hi my name is Raette and my daughter Michele is a Type2 diabetic. She was diagnosed over 12 years ago, started out with an ulcer on her big toe she had Kaiser they would just keep shaving it down and it wouldn't heal.So by the time she was sent to a foot Dr and they did Blood work that is when they found out she was Diabetic.By then it was too late she lost her first big toe,two weeks in the hospital was frustrating for her to say the least. It wasn't to long after that she lost another big toe, things were ok for awhile after that she was still working and then things started going down hill she found out that her kidneys were at 15% working capacity and for the past couple of years have been doing Dialysis 3 times a week and sometimes more. She is on Medi-cal and gets treated like crap she was told by a nurse about this Dr she thought would be great for my daughter but Medi-cal wouldn't approve it because they say she is end stage renal failure and that the Dr can't help her. That's BS she still needs a Primary Dr to take care of her.The last I heard her kidneys were at 7%,when she goes for her treatments her BP keeps going Dangerously low and they have told her it is really putting a strain on her heart. She got really Depressed the other day after having a really bad day at Dialysis she told me over the phone she just doesn't want to do this anymore, she is in so much pain from having the Nueropthy in her hands and feet,we were both in tears on the phone.I went over to her home the next day and spent the whole day with her trying to keep her spirits up we played cards and I actually beat her twice at Rummy lol.She was such an active person always working and now she can't even stand on her own, oh also forgot to tell you a few months back while her and her hubby were leaving Costco he was trying to get her out of the cart and her legs were all twisted up and she went down landed on her ankle wrong broke it,ended up in surgery had a plate and 7 screws put in it and then because the nurse wasn't paying attention the bottom of the splint that was on her heel she ended up with a damn sore that of course it has been taking weeks to heal.I need for her to find others she can talk to and help her through the tough days and let her get things off her chest. Her hubby is Amazing he has been doing everything and now he has been doing all the cooking and the cleaning,so what do you tell a almost 44 year old woman that used to be very active, that is now pretty much wheelchair and scooter bound and cannot help herself even take a shower what do you say to her to make her feel better and make her feel like she is not useless, she also said everyone would be better off with her gone,I told her don't you ever talk like that. That last part that kills me to think of my first born not here anymore,Ok now that I got myself crying I'm done for now, thank you all for listening...

Hey everybody, a few of my friends have diabetes, one who has had Type 1 since infancy, another recently diagnosed with Type 2, and a few others who have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic or have genetic factors that put them at increased risk for developing it. Though I myself don't have the disease, I have a bit of a genetic risk factor for it, since my grandfather on my mother's side had the disease, and he really wasn't taking good care of himself in regards to management, which by the time he died of a stroke at age 84, he was visually impaired as a result of the diabetes. I've lost 40 pounds since last year and adopted some good diet and exercise techniques, I may still face it later in my life (I'm 24 right now), but the more I can stay active and eat good, the better I feel. I hope I can learn some things on here that I can share with my diabetic friends so that they can help better their BG management and avoid my grandad's fate.
