Hi everyone. It doesn't seem very busy in here but always good to hear from people who understand it! I got diagnosed Jan 2010 and have been keeping things under control OK with diet and metformin. Currently HbA1c is 5.2%. However, any tips on how to keep it up year after year would be good. And any ideas for low-carb savoury snacks?

epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/15519 We need signatures! It's a petition to make Insulin Pumps more available to t1 diabetics in the UK Pleas sign & share - if we get 100,000 signatures this petition may be debated in the House of Commons.

Hi Eliza, as am American who has been living in the UK now, I understand your concern. The care i receive is great and the NHS is wonderful (though not perfect). You will need to get an NI number when you arrive here. Two websites with information about this are http://www.jobshop.stir.ac.uk/emp-issues/nin.php and http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/ni/index.htm The folk here have always been very helpful to me, so I wouldn't worry about it. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me. Or anyone else here - everyone is very helpful!

Eliza, I cant comment really about your entitlement to the NHS as a foreigner, as i can only say what the NHS is like. However it will be worthwhile to speak to the British Embassy in your country about it, and about the move to Britain for a year and see what they say. As long as your friends/lecturers know that you have diabetes, if worst came to the worst you'd get an ambulance called out to you.

Hi all. Not sure if this is the right place to post questions, but here goes...
I recently got an offer to study at the LSE for a 1 year masters program. I'm thrilled by this opportunity and the program is a perfect fit for what I want to do (International development). I'm still working out the financing and deciding whether or not i should try to defer until next year because the program starts this September. I would have so much to figure out, not to mention all of the diabetes things that would come into play.
Can anyone tell me about the healthcare system there? The LSE web site mentioned that students studying for more than 6 months can qualify to be under the NHS, so this is good news, but the school isn't giving me a lot of information (it seems they dont want to help too much until i have accepted their offer).
It is also just a huge thing to go abroad for a year not knowing anyone and having that fear of something diabetes-related happening and being completely on my own. I know I will meet people but who wants to say "hi! nice to meet you. here is my emergency shot, the glucagon, can i show you how to administer it?" ha
