Hello

My name is Daniel Weisz and I'm a London based Podiatrist.

I help prevent diabetic feet complications as well as treat in order to salvage the very serious ill feet (even those who have been recommended for amputations).

Correct control and treatment contribute to the quality of life of the diabetic patient.

Let's get the snowball rolling - Please feel free to ask me any question in regards to diabetic foot treatment and I'll do my best to answer each and every one of you.

SHOES
I have a problem with diabetic shoes.
I am 42 years old, type 1 of 32 years, i had an operation to remove an abbess from my heal 3 years ago and i have had a few ulcersinfections that have all now healed, no problems for over 18 months . I have little feeling in my toes and suffer from di Peripheral neuropathy in my feet and some proximal neuropathy in my legs.
I have had 3 pairs of NHS shoes made for me, by my podiatrist and one pair of slippers given to me, the slippers were solid base and velcro fastening, they were huge with a 2 inch base and with no ply in them,They were impossible to wear, slipping over and i could not control my feet.
The first pair of boots i had made were ok, and got a lot of wear over the winter months but were not suitable for summer wear. so i had a pair of trainers made. I only wore the trainer 3 times, they were big and bulky and gave me horrid pain in my right hip when i walked. Desperate for a pair of shoes my podiatist made me some strapped shoes, these were better than the trainers but still very bulky and i could not feel my feet in them, making it difficult to walk, they were fine with a pair of jeans but unsightly for ladies dresses etc.
These are shoes i am meant to wear ALL the time. I realise they are bulky for protection and may look fine on a 82 year old. But i am at active femine 42 year old. The bulkyness has to be compromised somehow as when you can not feel your feet it is made much worse by these type shoes . They cost the NHS about £300 a pair and I can not wear them :(
My podiatrist said i could try using the insoles of the shoes she made to put in a pair of my own shoes, but i could not find any that the insoles fitted in any store.
So i buy my own shoes, much to my podiatrist disgust , usually flat boots or trainers, but still have nothing to wear if i want to dress up or around the house .
Do you have any suggestions ?

So sorry to read about your problems with your feet! Did you try going for man size shoe liners and then just trimming them in the normal way? You wont have the lines the manufacturers provide, but you can start by cutting them to the outside sole shape then trimming them down till you get a nice fit! Since moving from UK to Spain I have found there are a lot of Orthopedia Shops. Like a chemist but selling all things surgical every kind of support. Including special shoe inserts. However they have to be paid for unless my surgeon gives me a prescription! I know we had similar places in London!
sadly I cannot get a special shoe here on Spanish NHS. So for my foot issues I either but slip ons with elastic and pay a cobbler to cut out the elastic and stitch new in. Or just cut the elastic and remove it! I buy slightly larger shoes with those Velcro tabs and I glue spacing pads from new shoe liners. The liners also make great corn and bunion pads tailored made!
I never buy shoes with leather soles. Reducing the chance of slipping!
I do hope you find some answers to solve your problem. A Happy & Better New Year.

would you please post an answer to my question of the 7th December 2011. Many Thanks
