Comment by Kilij on April 4, 2013 at 5:01am I've had type 1 diabetes for 32 years. I have not read Dr. Fuhrman, but he is often featured with VegSource, so I've seen some of his lectures. I think I go with less fat than Dr. Fuhrman generally recommends and more grains (leaning more toward Dr. Esselstyn's recommendations) and have been eating this way since August 2012. I have found that I am using less insulin, but have better blood sugars. My LDL has gone down. Lost about 25 pounds. And it has been so much easier to maintain than a low glycemic raw diet. I has been dragging my feet on a low glycemic raw diet. I feel much better eating this way.
Love Dr. F but he is too low fat for me. I am vegan 2 yeasr, T1 45 years. Feel great! eat much like Norman on previous post. Loads veggies, fruit, nuts, NUT BUTTERS, quinoa, flax, all seeds, coffee, green tea, coconut water, beans and low GI grains.A1C usually 6.2-6.5. Do maple syrup on anything when low.
Comment by Chaya on April 3, 2013 at 11:49pm Anyone read Dr Fuhrman? I tried a low glycemic raw diet for one month, but found it hard to maintain. Being vegan sounds easy in comparison. I am not 100% vegan yet, curious how changing diet/lifestyles has improved your blood sugars and energy?!

Comment by Norma Coello- Plum on January 26, 2013 at 7:32am Hi everyone, I am also a vegan. I eat veggies, nuts, whole wheat bread, hummus, beans, whole wheat tortillas; but I'll have to say lots and lots of nuts. My total cholesterol was 170, LDL was 85, HDL 75.1 and triglycierides was 48. I also drink black coffe with stevia and drink lots of water, no juice or fruit, just the occasional banana when I get a low. I also feel great and am thin as well. :) cheers to all the veganbetics!

Comment by Sarah Keech on August 24, 2012 at 6:42am Black coffee can make blood sugar go up because caffeine causes the body to release cortisol which is a stress hormone.
