Topic: The Restaurant Challenge!
Pf Changs
Tysons Galleria
1716M International Dr.
McLean, VA 22102
Anyone with any type of diabetes is welcome at these meetings.
This month we will be having a group “outing.” We will be visiting PF Chang’s, which serves an eclectic fusion Chinese and American cuisines. We have chosen a location closer in to the city as a convenience to those in DC and Arlington or Alexandria. The menu is filled with of men selections to choose and should present a challenge and opportunity for us all. Please come join us for an outing focused on discussing how we all deal with eating out. We will share how we choose restaurants, ordering tips and other strategies. This highlight of the evening will also be the “Carb Count Challenge.” In preparation, we ask that you not try to examine nutrition information beforehand. Prizes will be awarded for those making the “best” estimate of the carb count for their dinner as well as special mention for those achieving notable low carb counts as well as “epic” miscounts.
Since we are making a reservation with the restaurant, attendees are asked to confirm their participation by calling the Diabetes Center (1-877-571-4625). We will be confirming the count for the reservation for the restaurant, so please confirm.

Most importantly, we will discuss our feelings about our diagnosis and how our feelings may or may not have changed. This is a sharing opportunity, those that wish to share their story are encouraged to do so, but you can also attend and just listen, and that is fine.
Anyone with any type of diabetes is welcome at these meetings! Please feel free to invite your friends. Snacks are potluck. Coffee and tea will be provided.

If you’ve ever wondered about these questions, join us on Thursday evening, February 16th for some professional guidance on preventing blindness due to diabetes. Topic: How to Get and Stay Active When You’re Physically Limited
Located at the Inova Diabetes Center at Fair Oaks Hospital
3700 Joseph Siewick Drive, 4th Floor Conference Room, Fairfax, VA 22033
Anyone with any type of diabetes is welcome at these meetings! Please feel free to invite your friends.
Coffee and tea will be provided. Please feel free to bring a healthy snack to share.
People with diabetes often have additional health problems that make it difficult to move and get adequate physical activity. Activity is important not only for blood sugar control, but to help reduce heart disease risks.
Join us this Thursday evening for some professional guidance on getting and staying active with physical limitations. A professional Physical Therapist from the Inova Physical Therapy Center at Fair Oaks hospital will discuss the benefits of activity and ways to overcome barriers to physical activity. She will also provide information on more “joint friendly” fitness classes in the local community, and demonstrate some exercises that can be done in a chair, at a counter, or on a bed.
Next Meeting:
February 16th – Topic to be announced
Will still try to be there - may be limping a bit - just had surgery on the 18th and had 2 bouts of a cold so far - yikes I sound like a sickee. Am definately trying to be there because Alana Sugar is with the Weston Price foundation I think, and definately with the Northern Virginia Whole Foods meetup - I learned a lot from going to those meetings. They are so informative. BSC - thanks for being our leader!!!

Topic: Tour of Whole Foods, Fair Lakes
4501 Market Commons Dr, Fairfax, VA
***Note Alternate Location***
We will be touring Whole Foods with nutritionist Alana Sugar, CN. We will get a chance to see a variety of sustainable, organic and specialty foods, and learn how they fit into a diabetic diet. Learn about some of the more exotic foods, nut flours, whole and raw ingredients, organic veggies, free range and hormone/antibiotic free meats, etc. Ms. Sugar has given this tour before and is very knowledgeable on these subjects. The tour will take the whole session and we will have an opportunity to visit all the main sections of the store and talk with various representatives of the departments.
Should you wish to come early, Whole Foods has a variety of options for dinner. We meet at the front of the store inside the entrance promptly at 7:00pm.
For further information on the store check out the Whole Foods WebSite. And you can learn about the nutritionist who will give the tour, Ms. Alana Sugar (yes, that is her real name).
This meeting is always popular and unfortunately we must limit attendance, so you must RSVP to Kate Hampton. Call 703-391-4762 or email to kathryn.hampton@inova.org.
